Not great.

Hilditch has a decent premise, but actually does very little with it. On the one hand, there are a number of attempts to make it mysterious, but they lead nowhere. He fails to extract much atmosphere from it. On the other hand, there is the ethical question, but that too is handled rather poorly.

However, there isn't really all that much wrong with this film otherwise. Visually, it looks neat, albeit fairly unremarkable. The acting is also quite good, and the film is short, so the pace never slows down. The only thing truly missing is atmosphere, and that is unfortunately indispensable for a film like this.

Hilditch doesn't seem really suited for this genre, but he doesn't deliver a truly bad result either. It's just a bit of a shame about the potential, because a film like this really had more potential than he manages to get out of it. Decent filler for a one-time viewing, but that's all it is.

2.5*

Impressive acting by Carmen Ejogo in a suspenseful and mysterious film from beginning to end, beautiful landscape shots of Texas; overall perhaps not a masterpiece, but still an enjoyable watch, 3 stars from me.

A single mother [Carmen Ejogo] with a fear of flying travels by car with her daughter [Apollonia Love Pratt] from Phoenix to Arizona and breaks down in a remote, desolate place. When her daughter is bitten by a rattlesnake, she asks for help from a woman [Debrianna Mansini] in a trailer. The girl recovers miraculously, but there is an unspecified price attached to it, which is collected at a later time. When a mysterious man [Bruce Davis] reveals what that price is, the mother faces a moral dilemma. Atmospherically directed and Ejogo is convincing in the lead role, but the unsavory premise and weak plot make this difficult to sit through.
