Mwa high-school.

Another disappointing Netflix addition to the high school genre, one that's actually overly saccharine. While the concept is certainly worthwhile, I don't think I've ever seen a girl who's too tall and gets bullied for it.

The film is well-paced, at least. Pure entertainment, really, and I love high school, so it lasts a long time. But the film never lapses into slow or dreamy passages and stays straight to the point, which is a nice bonus for the experience.

The film also has a somewhat under-thought-out script at times. Not a single boy in the entire school stands taller than 185 centimeters? I find it rather odd, but oh well, those are minor points. The idea is nice, though I would have liked to see a little more focus on how Michelle got so tall. There's a brief reference to her fitness, but otherwise, that's about it.

Michelle herself is also good; I didn't know her as an actress yet, but she's quite solid. Carpenter is also cheerful, a bit too much of a type, but it's good. A few other familiar faces, like Zahn's. Eisner clearly struggles with the accent but is also quite commendable. I thought Gluck was the best part of the whole film.

The good thing is that the message isn't too obvious. Yes, be proud of yourself, we know that, and that's why it's so nice that it wasn't overly elaborated. It's a shame that the finale has to include another speech that suddenly has to hammer the message home. I've never seen these kinds of scenes work.

The rest of the movie is predictable and fairly straightforward. There's no innovation in the story beyond the tall-girl concept. Actually, I think it's a rather tame film. A typical Netflix filler for a Saturday night or something.

Not a great one, but fun to see once.

The film is chock-full of caricatures, most of which are rather unnerving (especially the parents). Ava Michelle gives a good performance, and Luke Eisner is also entertaining as the Swedish exchange student. However, the rest of the cast didn't really stand out.

The story seems quite predictable from the very first minute, but I still expected a slightly different ending. That's why I rate this film slightly above average.

Thanks to its success on Netflix, a sequel has been announced, which will likely be released in 2022.

I thought the acting was poor. All the characters were awkward and sometimes cringeworthy, except for the sister. Not my cup of tea.

But each to his own.
