The Death of Dick Long plot

Dick died this night. An event that Zeke and Earl don't necessarily want to hide from the world, as long as the way remains a secret. A difficult task for the gentlemen there in narrow-minded Alabama, where news spreads like wildfire.

Meh.

Quite a disappointment, although that is mainly because Scheinert's first film was a great surprise. That was in combination with Kwan, I have no idea whether that is the problem, or whether Scheinert perhaps just wanted to try something different with his second film, but it certainly feels a lot less memorable.

Fortunately it's not bad. It takes a while before the film gets going and the black humor finds its way, but after a quarter of a film it is quite funny. The acting is also quite good and the leisurely pace suits the setting, but in general it is a bit too tame for this type of film. The central revelation is not as weird as hoped and the lack of a real climax does not do this film any good.

This actually makes it a somewhat typical A24 film. As far as I'm concerned, it's a label for young people who have grown old too quickly. It all wants to be something different and daring, but in the end it is often very mellow and neat, without too many rough edges. Rarely really bad films, rarely really good films.

Nice snack, but that's all it is. And after Scheinert's first film, that's actually not enough.

Haven't seen Scheinert's first film yet, but I was also hoping for something more absurd here. It is a film that is actually built entirely around one punchline and it is not even very funny or weird. The film plays more like some kind of lame, adolescent joke rather than a witty wacky movie.

The slightly black humor is pleasant, but the film's greatest strength lies in creating the most uncomfortable situations. The acting is quite good and, for example, that last scene at the table is quite cringy in an enjoyable way. As far as I'm concerned, the saving factor of this film, otherwise not very memorable. 3*

I thought Swiss army man was quite brilliant. However, this movie is very different. Let me first start with the less positive points because I am largely enthusiastic about this film.

I don't know if it's because Scheinert was on his own, but the direction of this film is nothing special. There are hardly any camera movements, the lighting and sound are not good and there is not a single shot that stands out. The music is also either not present or not relevant. That's a shame because a really good film is of course good in all areas, in terms of acting, script, direction and music.

In terms of acting and screenplay, this film is good. The acting is convincing, but much of the same. Everyone is very naive and stupid. Including the agents. Yet it is done in such a way that it is convincing and does not become stereotypical. That's certainly nice. This film is also quite funny, but it is certainly not a comedy and ultimately heavy themes emerge here. Which you hardly see in American films. In that regard, this film is very brave. Too bad Scheinert ended up alone here. I understand that he wanted to portray it naturally and realistically, but as far as I'm concerned this doesn't mean that you have to make an ugly film in terms of cinematography and shots. He should have left more of his mark on this to involve the viewer more in the main characters. Then the film would have had much more impact.
