Maaaaaaan I loved the '90s! Wonderful video that perfectly captures the atmosphere. The young cast plays well, the story is very recognizable and the great music brings back many memories. I think it passed! Especially as a directorial debut.

After seeing Eighth Grade in the cinema before, it was now time for Mid90s, those coming of age films in the cinema and also 2 strong ones in a row!

Mid90s feels so real and takes you in that time without any effort, characters feel lifelike and the acting is very natural. The film lasts less than an hour and a half, but a lot happens in this fairly short time and we soon learn to care about the character Stevie, who by the way is also really impressively portrayed by the young but without doubt talented Sunny Suljic.

I saw Lucas Hedges earlier in Ben is Back of the same year, the role he plays in this film also has some similarities with that, but he is apparently very convincing and good at these kinds of roles.

I felt very sorry for Stevie, who is busy trying to find his own identity, something we all went through during puberty and also produced many recognizable situations. Where Eighth Grade was still a little predictable (which isn't bad at all), Stevie's story goes in all directions and I really had to relax during the credits. Heavy film that is without a doubt more than worth it and the best cinema film I've seen so far this year.

4.5*

A film with The Pharcyde, Souls of Mischief and Gravediggaz, but also Nirvana and Morrissey can count on my kindness anyway. The film does not need that, because even without the fine soundtrack, the film has a lot to offer. The biggest asset is Stevie/Sunburn himself; what a fantastic man. The film has a lot of strong scenes, without any overacting (except maybe the overacting that comes with insecure teenagers who want to be tough). It is a gray film, in the sense that all the characters have their beautiful and ugly sides. That gives the film credibility and also makes it moving. Recommended.
