Excellent film about a young wrestler whose life is apparently ahead. A beautiful family drama that manages to move here and there. A good soundtrack, beautiful images and above all beautiful camera work that together carry you along in the story in a nice and atmospheric way. It could have been a little shorter, but it didn't have to be for me.

Certainly a film that has been given a lot of attention. There's nothing wrong with the acting either. Still, the movie didn't quite grab me. For me this is partly due to the camera work (long out of focus, faded colors) and the soundtrack. The soundtrack itself is beautifully mixed (for the audio fanatics this is a pleasure), but not always matching the atmosphere of the film or the emotion you get from the images. And the rather contrived format changes (from 16:9 to 21:9 to 4:3) didn't help getting into the movie either. The script also falters a bit for me. Sometimes there were really too long scenes that I would rather have found on the bonus CD at the 'deleted scenes'. Moreover, the story is rather artificially divided into two parts. The first half hour of the 2nd part I was looking for where the filmmaker wanted to go. The end is rushed. There are still a few checkmarks to be made. That's why this movie drops in my score quite a bit. What could have been a potential 4 - 4.5 star has now become a 3 star film.

New Shuts.

I don't know much about this director yet, but based on his previous films, this was not exactly the film I expected from him. I thought he was into some more foreboding thriller movies, but Waves is more of a full-blown drama movie with some crime scenes in between. Especially in the first half then.

The film regularly reminded me of Euphoria. I see the stylization as well as the characters and the actors appear in that series. The difference may be that Euphoria is much faster and more intense, while this film certainly takes a little more time in the second half to calmly unravel the development between characters. Nevertheless, I often got the vibe of both titles and since I am quite pleased with Euphoria I had no problem with it.

Interesting development and characters completed during the first half are a strong point, with some atmospheric visuals to make that even better. The cinematography is good and the film looks neat. The problem is the change in tone between the first and second half. Where the first half is a bit more problematic and gripping, the second half is a bit more focused on hope only with other characters, but the pace that slows down is not quite right.

All in all, it's an entertaining piece of film. I was able to enjoy it, and the playing time was never really felt. It is mainly the somewhat unfortunate shift in tempo that makes the middle part more difficult. Other than that, solid in many ways, I'd like to see Shults make another film because he always manages to get a good ending.
