A gem from Joon-ho Bong. As far as I'm concerned, a deserved Golden Palm winner and in any case one of the best films I've seen this year. Joon-ho Bong starts from the contrast. An underprivileged family tries to start its way up by infiltrating a wealthy elite family. Despite the many talents that the underprivileged family has, they always try to gain their advantages by surreptitiously. It starts innocently with the tapping of Wi-Fi, but when they come into contact with the naive Park family, the boundaries are constantly pushed. The Kim family is not a bad family, but they are opportunistic and it is their way of surviving in their otherwise desperate situation of poverty. Despair and a sense of self-worth underlie their cunning plan.
Joon-ho Bong sets the tone of deception in a masterly and detailed way, which is staged. As a viewer you will be fascinated how the Kim family puts so much sacrifice and accuracy in order to still have influence within the wealthy family. The plot is well constructed and cinematographically Joon-ho Bong strives for perfection.
Towards the end you get a plot twist. Even the deluge is crucial to the plot. The lights literally go out and the painful contrast between rich and poor becomes clear when one individual has to row together , but the other whines about something banal. The garden party is getting a bit out of hand, but it's understandable why Kim stabbed his boss. The final scene with the son left me with a minor disillusionment for a moment, but luckily that recovered as it was an idealized perspective.

Fine.
Actually obliged to my stand to watch "the best film of the year" anyway, now that it turns out to be an Asian. Bong isn't a bad director either, but South Korea will never become my favorite film country. That proves again this time.
It really escapes me how this movie gets all the hype and accolades. I thought it was all quite nice, but nothing remarkable, nothing exceptional, nothing surprising. After fifteen minutes it is clear how the first hour will unfold, after that the film swings in all directions without becoming very interesting.
Acting is nice, visually it's just okay. And it's not really boring either, but it's not a bit exciting or unpredictable either. That's why actually half an hour too long, films like this should be a bit more compact, because they don't have much to tell.
Wondering if there will be much left. Didn't bore me and it was made expert, but that's about all. I wonder what kind of movies people will be watching for a whole year if this one comes out as the best.

Because the film won Oscars last year and was so successful, I decided to check out Parasite. What a setback.
It may touch on an important theme (social inequality) and be beautifully filmed, but if the story is so bland, it is a bad film in my opinion. Doesn't seem typical Korean to me, but more of a fake American film and then a lot worse. Like frans123, it reminded me of those old farces by John Lantink, which I liked as a child.
I'm surprised at the high rating here. Seems stiff to me that if the same movie were American it would almost get a 4, it would have come out at a 3 or lower.
A Korean film like Burning (Beoning) from a year earlier is much better, but less accessible and perhaps more typically Korean. That makes you apparently no chance for Oscars.
