“I'm not gonna fight your war. I'm gonna end it.”

Entertaining. Captain Marvel is certainly not a perfect film, and especially the script is a bit of a let down. But as an origin story for Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, it certainly does. Some characters are barely developed, and especially Ronan, Starforce (Hounsou, Chan etc.) and Agent Coulson are almost in the game.

Most importantly, Brie convinces Larson as Captain Marvel, and after a hesitant start, she really manages to make the role her own. Especially in the scenes with Jackson, Lynch and the young Akbar, Larson shows her strongest side. Bold, assertive, funny and self-assured, Larson won't be fooled. The Skrulls/Talos subplot is surprisingly well fleshed out, and Mendelsohn once again shows what a fantastic actor he is. Goose the Cat steals the show, and the 90s setting provides some (not too subtle) winks. The actors deserve a better script, but luckily it doesn't come at the expense of an entertaining and smooth 21st Marvel film. With a post-credits scene that will have you looking forward to Endgame.

Decent Marvel. Somehow you have to give a lot of films from the Cinematic Universe 5* if you see what they are intended for (besides making money for Disney): just letting you sit comfortably for two hours in the cinema. I was never bored, so somehow the film does that well. But vice versa, once out of the room I had already forgotten about the film.

It's nice that the film is an origin story without being real, Larson is already who she is but just has to discover that. Fortunately, she's a good actress, arguably the best in the entire MCU at showing emotion. She is a bit flat as a leading lady or superhero, but as a troubled person she does it well and nicely subdued. Also a huge contrast to Jackson who carries the whole movie with ease and brings in just that little bit of flair needed to entertain you, otherwise this would have turned out to be a boring beast. I'm starting to get tired of Mendelsohn who always seems to play the same part. Although he turns out to be something different once in the second hour, and he does that very strongly.. A little less typecasting would help.

The action is okay but often a bit chaotic in the picture and it doesn't really pop either. Music with some hits from the 90s is a somewhat safe choice. The story itself is very chaotic, even if you've seen all the other movies from the MCU. But well, enough. 3.0*.

The world of the MCU may have started off a bit clumsy, but film after film they made for a rock-solid franchise. No classics, but consistent with top quality. And a self-confidence that they clearly radiate. You can also see from those films that they come from the same stable. Yet all heroes have their own individuality. I don't like all their movies, but you have to tell them that they know what they are doing.

With the end in sight for the original Avengers, newcomers like Black Panther and Spider-Man are already doing well. But with Captain Marvel I really had the feeling that they could play a new big asset and their world is far from done. Captain Marvel can easily take over from Captain America or Iron Man as the franchise's headliner. Brie Larson is cut out for this role. And where Wonder Woman was still surrounded by men who wanted to put themselves in the foreground, Larson is clearly the lead in this film. Even Samuel L. Jackson remains the sidekick who won't walk with all the credit. Larson exudes a great self-confidence that she will continue to grow in. Not a little girl who learns her powers from a (male) master or daughter of a (male) patriarch who holds sway. Just a superheroine with her heart in the right place.

Creatively, this is not the best film in the series, but if you like Marvel, this is a top film. You get everything you can expect and the humor is great. No doubt we will see some great movies here. And the new Avengers may well be a farewell for some well-known figures, but the throne has already been taken by this newcomer.
