“No-one wants to see a convicted criminal up there.”

“Johnny Cash was a convicted criminal, you ball-bag.”

Strong. Wild Rose has a predictable course, and only towards the end when Rose travels to Nashville does director Tom Harper give a strong twist to the predictable feel-good ending. Of course Harper wants to leave the viewer with a good feeling, but Rose-Lynn does learn a wise lesson. That the predictable plot does not bother for a moment is due to the fantastic and sincere acting of Jessie Buckley (an actress with a beautiful smile). Buckley has some great moments together with Julie Walters, and you have to be made of stone not to to be moved when Buckley sings 'Glasgow (No Place Like Home)' at the end.

Admittedly on the sentimental side, Jessie Buckley is a very nice actress to watch, also in Chernobyl and I'm Thinking of Ending Things.

The film is an ode to country and is peppered with countless fine songs and images of Glasgow and Nashville. Audiovisually there is (therefore) little to criticize about the film.

Where the film does fall short is mainly in the characters around Rose-Lynn. For example, I found Susannah's role a bit vague while watching; why does she want Rose-Lynn to break through so badly? Is she simply so philanthropic or does she see in Rose-Lynn something she herself would have liked to be? Her over-enthusiasm and pushy behavior made me think there was more to it.

It is also never clear why Rose-Lynn lies to her about her own children. It makes her unsympathetic when there is no real reason for it.

The message of the film was sometimes too obvious ('you already have happiness at home'), but overall not a bad film.

3.5*

Irresistible film about a recently released young mother (Jessie Buckley), who dreams of escaping her bleak surroundings and making it as a country singer in Nashville. One problem: she lives in Glasgow, Scotland. Buckley is phenomenal in the lead role, as is Julie Walters, who plays her mother. The story never feels forced and the characters are very well developed. The sober environment in which the film is set also contributes greatly to the atmosphere.
