"Make a killing. Make a living."

The 1850s. Hermann Kermit Warm is a resourceful and sympathetic man who, according to the Commodore, has stolen something important. Their assignment turns out to be surprisingly different in the end.

Strange duck in the bite within the Western genre. It is certainly not due to the strong cast, exciting setting and fierce shootouts. Still, the director gets out of hand here and there by experimenting with different angles and it becomes a somewhat incoherent whole. Also poops in here and there, so that the feeling of 'there was more in here' dominates.

Pleasant viewing piece with, in addition to the beautiful cinematography, a nice balance between the tough world of gold diggers, rulers and assassins and a good portion of humor - often of a cynical nature - which is actually woven throughout the entire film and even takes on a sentimental cachet in the end.

The four main protagonists are the best. The music is also very enjoyable.

Abundantly served to Césars, to which the nationality of the director and co-production are no stranger. Also named the Dardenne brothers as co-producers.

Friendly.

Not the best western made in recent years. It is therefore somewhat unbalanced and not everything is equally interesting. It's also a bit too slick for me to really approach that sweaty, rough feeling of that zeitgeist. It is a western that, as the hype seems to be in recent years, 'undresses' the genre. The cardboard types of yesteryear seem to have disappeared for some time now.

With a good dose of self-awareness, Joaquin Phoenix and a pleasantly acting John C. Reilly make their way through gold-digging land. Their dynamic is better than the one between Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed, who are not necessarily the lesser actors but are given less time and space to make something of it. When the two storylines merge I expected a little more subcutaneous tension, but it is perhaps the intention that the film limps on two extremes: on the one hand that tension, on the other hand [spoiler ]the strange collaboration. The fact that the breaking up of their company is ultimately rather silly, fits within that stripping of the genre.

At the end of the ride, an original, somewhat unbalanced western remains. Far from the best I've seen in recent years, but one that has its place among all those other westerns that keep trying to reinvent the genre. The cleverly designed opening minutes deserve a late mention in my opinion.
