The Souvenir

Powerful film by Joanna Hogg. In the beginning you don't know exactly where Hogg wants to go with The Souvenir, but as soon as Anthony is introduced and you get an insight into the relationship between Julie and Anthony it gets a lot better. You can see right away that this is a dysfunctional relationship in which Julie is constantly manipulated by Anthony. But as is so often the case in these kinds of relationships, Julie has a hard time saying goodbye to Anthony. That he is struggling with a drug addiction doesn't really come as a surprise. The ending is fantastically done by Hogg, and the movie couldn't have ended better.

"Sound and Sight" called this the 'best movie of 2019' and I'd blame them if it weren't for the critically acclaimed, truly mesmerizing display. It should be clear that the reason for this praise has completely eluded me.

The story, as far as you can tell, concerns Julie [Honor Swinton Byrne], a 23-year-old film student from a wealthy family who would like to make a film about a boy from Sutherland. She talks to some would-be producers, talks merrily about the works of Hitchcock and the Nouvelle Vague at film school and sponsors the heroin addiction of her arrogant, insufferable 'lover' Anthony [Tom Burke].

There is no character development, no dramatic build-up or emotion at all and when former film student Patrick [Richard Ayoade] proclaims that you should 'just make films', you get the feeling that the maker of "The Souvenir" is just as amateur as the main character. However, director Joanna Hogg is a respected and acclaimed filmmaker and that is apparently enough to praise this film to the skies. Hands down the most overrated movie of the century...so far.

Obvious

Sometimes you know what kind of movie you've got your hands on when the movie has just started. I immediately had that feeling too. And that was unfortunately not positive. The fact that the film is boring is mainly because it lives in the desolate arthouse world with film as the underlying subject. Also those ugly frames and then just leave them, and that worthless music that is just cut off is another arthouse trope to convert ignorance into conscious choices. It's the laziest form of filmmaking. It's a pity for Tilda Swinton's daughter who is doing her best. The relationship is also known in film land, but perhaps this gentleman is a bit more loser than usual. Hope for Hogg that was not completely autobiographical (which is very clear throughout the film) my god what a loser.

Yes, I couldn't handle this at all. It's such a shame that just like with a Netflix romcom, you know exactly where it's going with this kind of art house film.

1.5 stars I'm done with this.
