The story of Michelle Payne, the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup. Paddy Payne [Sam Neill] is the patriarch of a family that was born into equestrian sports. His wife died shortly after giving birth to their tenth child, Michelle [Teresa Palmer], and she too is now at an age to pursue the big family dream of winning the prestigious Melbourne Cup. But when her sister Brigid [Anneliese Apps] dies in a race, Paddy tries everything to avoid losing Michelle too. However, Michelle finds support in her brother Stevie [Stevie Payne, playing himself], who inspires her and helps her pursue her dream. But Michelle and Stevie are the only ones who believe a woman will ever win the Melbourne Cup.
