Lazzaro Felice plot

Lazzaro is a young farmer of exceptional goodness who lives in rural Inviolata. Life in the countryside has remained the same for centuries: the Marquis exploits the peasants who, in turn, profit from Lazzaro. One summer, the latter befriends Tancredi, the Marquis's son. It is because of this that Lazzaro can travel through time and that will lead him to the modern world.

Somewhere in the Italian interior, a farming commune has escaped the linear progression of time. A draconian marchioness maintains a system of exploitation on the artificial pilot: no one has yet come along to tell the oppressed families that sharecropping has long been abolished.

(...)

There was a mythical time when only wolves could feed the king of the Italian city. With that thought in mind, it is only logical that a beautiful white creature would emerge as Lazzaro's patron saint. At the level of the story, we have long since passed what was credible at that point. At the level of the fable, however, an opening is created here: in Rohrwacher's world a simple soul can expose a great deception. Major social constructions (feudalism, neoliberalism) are disarmed in a film landscape that only flourishes for the oppressed. A key role is reserved for the healing power of music: it was Fellini (Le notti di Cabiria) who understood that the wonderful appearance of sounds could provide comfort and relief.

Pleasant film by Rohrwacher, with many recognizable ingredients from Le Meraviglie, which I like even better. The transformation of the story from the halfway point is again remarkable. The kind-hearted Lazzaro, who is portrayed as a saint, is an endearing protagonist. Yet this is not a new theme, such characters have been portrayed before (the most famous is probably Prince Myshkin from Dostoevsky's The Idiot, but there are many, you will come across Von Trier, Dreyer, Herzog them too). I also think that Rohrwacher makes it very explicit and that at the same time makes it seem rather contrived. That thing with the wolf, that couch, in my eyes it's all somewhat contrived. Fortunately, a lot is made up for with the organ sounds at the end, the moment they enter that church gives goosebumps. A fine film, but one with several shortcomings.

Intriguing enough to keep watching, but ultimately a disappointment. I read fairy taleand beautiful Italian images, but I didn't get much out of it. Perhaps I am also a bit spoiled as an avid Italy traveler. I also missed the time travel. Perhaps that was the fall that Lazzaro made and he fell into another time in a sci-fi style? Perhaps Donnie Vallermee didn't get this either. Furthermore, certainly special scenes, call them theatrical and also fascinatingly shot images. A big 5 from me because of the ability to keep me curious about the development of the story.
