Movies about the excesses of religion don't always appeal to me, because it quickly becomes more of the same and subtlety is usually lacking. In that respect, Temblores cleverly avoids the really big slips. The second part of the film tends to derail slightly into a freak show, with a consequent declining interest on my part, but I found the final scene particularly beautiful and brings me back to 3.5*.

What I especially like about it are the small scenes outside the main story. The little brother who lectures his sister because she prays wrong, or Rosa who puts family member Luis in his place when he tries to impose himself on Mrs. Isa, or how Francisco moves through one of those gay bars. Bustamante also delivers a stylistic film, for example fairly striking shots where his characters are positioned at both extremes of the frame.

As far as I'm concerned, Temblores is more than a vehicle in an activist agenda or a director's personal struggle, it has plenty to offer a 'neutral' film viewer.

I think it's a very good movie. I was in it almost right away. These kind of stories interest me, I think it's a realistic film and I find the acting very convincing and natural. I find the children endearing. I think it's a beautiful, sensitive film and it touched me. 4*

An uncomfortable film about a married man/father who likes men and is forced by his environment to undergo conversion therapy. A sensitive drama with an unsavory role for the church. In the final scene, the daughter looks at her father a little pityingly and desperately. I also had that feeling about this film.
