Strong sketch of life low on the labor market ladder, in eastern Germany, based on the adventures of Christian, who tries to get his hitherto not too prosperous life back on track by taking a job in a convenience store.

The great strength of the film is not only the setting - inside and outside 'die Gängen' - which, in all its shabbyness and desolation, is sometimes portrayed very beautifully and atmospherically: the parking lot, the coffee corner, the interior of the house from Bruno on the highway, where every few seconds in the evening the light of the passing cars falls through the window.

In particular, it is also the calm narrative, with which Stuber manages to hit exactly the right tone. He clearly has no need to pimp the screenplay with all kinds of spectacular, 'original' developments, and it doesn't get too dramatic either. In any case, no more than is necessary to show that the life of his characters, for all the mutual solidarity and even warmth, and the honor they take in the modest work they do, is often a life on the verge of despair. .

The atmosphere of the film is reflected in its characters: they only have the bare essentials to say, and the actors have no qualms about portraying their characters without unnecessary frills.

And if the (fine) soundtrack is also dosed and used effectively in such a film, there is little to complain about as far as I'm concerned.

Mediocre film in which a construction worker gets a new job as a shelf stacker in a supermarket. The dynamics between the employees and the supermarket itself are all credible. The slow pace is not the problem, but the film is on the boring side. Mainly because the characters didn't captivate me.

A film about connection, loneliness and the daily burden of life that has to be borne. Indeed a very good film with a very human touch. No conflicts and squabbles, but an almost tacit solidarity prevails between the employees. Bruno and the taciturn Christian are soon two hands on one belly. The pleasant romantic little thing with Marion was also a good thing. They slowly but surely grow closer to each other, but it is never romance in full force.

This film mainly reminded me of Paterson (3.5*) who used the same structure of daily routine, which I also liked in the aforementioned film. Here those routines take place between the shelves of a supermarket. The main actor immediately reminded me of Joaquin Phoenix who looks like two drops of water, and his character is a somewhat strange figure, full of tattoos, introverted, a bit of a follower, but a good-natured guy nonetheless.

A tender and warm film as I like to see it. Spacious 3.5*
