There are two moments in Wildlife when sixteen-year-old Joe Brinson's (debutant Ed Oxenbould) world falls apart before his eyes. Both times the camera fixes itself on the shocked gaze of the young film viewer: just like in Richard Ford's novel (1990), it is Joe who realizes, tells and sees. At the end of the film, he will be the one who manages to capture the story of his parents in a single image.

That story begins with a new beginning. Great Falls, Montana is the next home for Joe and his parents. Jerry (Jake Gyllenhaal) assists at the local golf course and tries to survive on his diligent and customer-friendly attitude. It soon becomes apparent that his petulant boss does not care at all. If it's up to him, his employees will remain radars in the machine, coins instead of people. We can already situate Joe's first shocked look at this moment: DoP Diego García (including Neon Bull, Cemetery of Splendor and the new film by Carlos Reygadas) frames the son's face when he realizes what his father is being called away for. This is the first sensation. Capital demands dehumanization and self-humiliation.

This is really the kind of movie that makes you think: don't do it. It's more boring than watching hair grow out of your big toe. That doesn't have to be a bad thing, when a film offers room for great acting talent.

But I don't see that here either.

Gyllenhaal on autopilot, Oxenbould with a continuous "huh" look in his eyes and Carey Mulligan starting an unbelievable romance with the most unappetizing guy I've ever seen on my plasma TV.

And why? Hubby was gone. A year? No. Half a year? No. A week. A week, and the insufferable character of Carey Mulligan was already itching for her to dive into the suitcase with such a puffy poop bag - with all the consequences that entails.

Yes, sorry, but if I can't empathize, it will soon stop for me.

1.5 star

This movie doesn't feel that good. I get the concept of a very dull, quiet town. Where people have little to do. My son is not really popular, parents are also middle class people. And there is simply not much to do. Father goes away for work for a while and mother and child sit at home and stare into space. Then there is some action because mother is cheating. Son doesn't like it, but doesn't really dare to say anything and Dad comes home again. It's not really bad, but it's not really good either. I will watch this movie once and never again.
