Is a film characterized by banal and flat humor a good film? Probably not. Is such a movie a good comedy? The answer to that question is more difficult. After all, good comedy, just like the title 'good film', is no more than a relative term. I didn't like it, but I liked it quite a bit. I really like simple and easy and predictable and flat every now and then. This film fulfilled that need perfectly. I had to laugh a lot at times. And making a smile is the function of comedy. A successful film, I think.

A film like this that draws on the accumulated vulgarity of countless predecessors is certainly not original. The only difference from all that other flatness is perhaps the angle. The plot line is slightly different. Just a little more surprising. Incidentally, such a surprise is only relatively important. After all, it is no more than another coat rack for the same recognizable humour. Tasteless, easy, mindless and incredibly banal. Of that humor.

So not great entertainment, but at times wonderfully funny. The flat situations are often fun. The flat characters almost never. Such a Leslie Mann is not funny as a character, but the circumstances in which her character ends up often are. That fact applies to almost all characters.

One character is the exception. That's the character played by John Cena. I liked him on the comedic level. The man has a funny look and plays a believable silly and naive. Perhaps it helped that I was not hindered by any historical awareness of his person.

The length of the film is also too long. With a comedy of this nature, just keep it to a maximum of 90 minutes and preferably shorter. After an hour of filming, my hunger for plain humor was satisfied.

ew.

What a complete dragon of a movie. It's some well-worn, cunning cliché of America. With prudish parents who are way too patronizing about their children and children who, in addition to being playful and wild, are oh so grown up at the right times. Of course the parents learn their lesson (but not really in the end haha) and the children are perfectly fine. And if it wasn't American enough...prom night!

Leaving aside the whining setting and whining morality .. it's a comedy, but one without a successful humour. A half grin left and right, but that was about it. None of the actors were funny, although some also had such annoying characters that you can hardly blame them. There were a few weird scenes, like the butt chug and the blindfolded game, which mainly felt like obligatory numbers, because such a thing has to be included in a modern comedy. Doesn't matter if it's completely out of tune.

The only thing that makes the film somewhat bearable is the lightness, the pace and the relatively short playing time. But those are small plasters for a fairly large wound. It's been a long time since I've seen such a bad American comedy, there's hardly anything to laugh about, the jokes are stale and it's all so terribly well-behaved and mapped out politically correct.

Oh, and then that lesbian girl who says she's a lesbian... hugs & kisses all around and party to some American pussy pop song. You just have to be in the mood...

1.0*

Still okay. Sometimes it is funny and the story can certainly continue. There are some social themes in this being rammed down your throat a bit too much. Well, you have to look through that, it didn't really bother me, but it does stand out. Gina Gershon being asked here to just get off the butt and walk around the house naked and blindfolded. Well, she can still be seen by me, but I do wonder if she takes this role. A movie for fans of American Pie or The Hangover I think.
