Beyond Skyline plot

Sequel to Skyline (2010), where the events take place at the same time as that movie, but in a different location. In this story, a detective does everything he can to free his son from a warship with violent aliens on board. This one, like many others, was sucked up by the ship.

Not good.

Trying to do a Cloverfield. Same timeline, different story. Although they could have made ten films with this "story." It really goes in all directions, unfortunately not in any interesting direction. The result is definitely worth it.

I think there must have been a budget. No blockbuster hits, but the effects looked pretty good. I saw that there were also Chinese backers in the mix; it's still surprising which films they bank on. That certainly helps during the first half hour, when the invasion begins.

Unfortunately, the spacecraft and aliens aren't all that cool, and their spaceship is more kitschy than cool. Furthermore, the action is terrible (although with some interesting Asian names, which unfortunately aren't used effectively), and the story was so bad that it became simply tedious after half an hour. Finally, there's the cast, with Grillo as the low point.

No, part 1 was better than this. Cheap pulp, but in a rather unpleasant way. It's a shame, because these are the kinds of movies I miss a bit in the current sci-fi craze.

2.0*

A lousy sequel to the already-not-so-great original. The special effects are mostly passable, but the plot and characters are truly awful. The performance of Iko Uwais, the lead actor in The Raid, is also completely pointless. In short, avoid this one.

Today I watched this 2nd part on Blu-ray after watching the 1st part yesterday.

I actually found this film slightly better than the first. The second half was particularly strong, as they seemingly crash into a jungle, and then we see Iko Iwais and the martial arts. It doesn't really fit the film at all, but it wasn't particularly distracting either.

The first part of the film was more in the civilised world with the subway scene and the interlude in the space station itself and the third part (the best part) in the jungle with lots of fights and explosions.

So I thought it was a very pleasant film, on to the sequel!
