Koreeda opens with a climax. In the opening scene we see how Misumi (Kôji Yakusho) robbed the life of a factory owner with the night as a witness. Lawyer Shigemori (Masaharu Fukuyama) doesn't have to make any effort to elicit a confession, but the big question why is infinitely more complex. Misumi approaches his motive with an almost psychopathic indifference – the truth of the moment will have flown away in ten minutes. Shimegori watches it with passive eyes. Those who are not careful will drown in Rashom uncertainty (I borrow that allusion from someone else), whereby the person condemned to subjectivity can ultimately never know the truth.

In postmodern times, nothing is as confusing as a truth that we cannot ignore, and that is exactly what Koreeda plays with. The Japanese did this cleverly enough that the undersigned initially missed the point: after the credits, the many questions easily outweighed the answers. Thank you to the esteemed colleague who gave the decisive push in the right direction during the debriefing. The Third Murder earns its mark as a deceptively layered film. It is about the viewer who searches for answers in the corners of the frame, and is therefore in danger of missing that the truth lies in the middle. That we can see what even the lawyer - and therefore the law itself - does not see.

The opening is the only moment in which this soporific drama comes to life: we see how Misumi kills a man on the banks of a river and burns his body. Misumi is a repeat offender so this is his second murder. During his trial, he is defended by Shigemori, the son of the judge who allowed Misumi to escape the death penalty last time. Shigemori Jr tries to prepare his case as best he can and Misumi talks a lot but says little, so to his great frustration (and that of the viewer) no one is the wiser. Atmospheric piano motifs and a few intense scenes want us to believe that it all has great meaning, but the dialogues are as slow as they are annoying. The question is whether Misumi will escape the death penalty due to extenuating circumstances, but the title already answers that question. Anyone who wants to relax can do so with this film, but anyone who really wants to be intellectually challenged would be better off playing Candycrush at the back of the room.

Shoemaker stick to your last. Koreeda has made many fantastic films, but this is definitely not one of them, in fact one of his worst ever. A piece of junk that did not fascinate me at all, I still think his best films are shoplifters and like father like son....
