"Many vets complain of alienation, rage, or guilt". In 1985, Paul Hardcastle used quotes like this as a sample in his world hit "19" to draw attention to the veterans of the Vietnam War. In 'Thank You For You Service' (probably the worst film title of the year), PTS still appears to lead to harrowing situations. The film follows three members of the same commando after their return from Iraq. Billy [Joe Cole] has escaped death in explosions so often that he has become mentally unstable and is close to despair when he returns home to find that his girlfriend has left him; Solo [Beulah Koale] has serious memory problems as a result of a head trauma, but in his attempts to get help he runs up against a bureaucratic wall that he cannot resolve in his condition; Adam [Miles Teller] is the commander whose gnawing feelings of guilt slowly but surely eat him up from the inside.

The subject matter is certainly not new, but the effective use of flashbacks combined with strong performances from Teller and Koale ensure that you get a small insight into the way in which war experiences (can) affect the daily lives of veterans. There is also excellent supporting work from Amy Schumer as the widow of Adam's fallen commander and Omar J Dorsey as an Afghanistan veteran who 'takes in' Solo. Shame about the awful title, because this is no slimy tribute to war veterans, but a penetrating look into the post-war civilian lives of so many who fought for their country.

Impactless film.

The message is strong, but not strongly conveyed by Hall. In any case, this film has no real impact anywhere and as a viewer you hardly get a bond with the veterans while this should be the case. This has to do with the fact that no image is really moving, which gave me more the impression of pretentiousness.

Teller is as expected not bad, but knows little to do with his character and can bring it little to life. Special that Schumer participates, she was also ok. Bennett was also a positive appearance, a bit better than the average role that I see from her.

The opening is good, but the film quickly collapses. It is all a bit dull and the characters the story revolves around are not interesting enough to sustain this 108-minute veteran drama. The message is there, but the impact is lacking.

But the film is certainly smooth in the first part, the second part is more of an intrusive drama that never wants to become gripping. Although there are some scenes here and there that do come through well, suicide of Cole, opening, meeting between Teller and Haze were quite strong scenes. But actually it stays with that.

Too bad, because the message had enough potential and visually it was all fine, although the slow-motion explosion in the last flashback was very poorly chosen. That takes away the impact. But for the rest it is never deadly boring, only more should have been made of it.

I say freedom is won / through the blood of someone's son

Perhaps the most impressive thing about the entire film is that Bruce Springsteen wrote a song for the title role: Freedom Cadence. An ode to the most belligerent country in history, where freedom is professed but not experienced. The country that lets entire populations live in such miserable conditions that signing is the only way out - and shamelessly drops the soldiers when they return damaged. And even the minimum that was there is now being cut back by Trump, because yes, they are losers after all.

It's not really a bad film, it's more that there are already countless better ones. I'll just mention Causeway (2022), This Is Not a War Story (2021), or a little longer ago The Hurt Locker (2008), Brothers (2009)/Brødre (2004), In the Valley of Elah (2007). And that's just in a minute and off the cuff, if I check my log I can dig up dozens of more titles - and yes, I'm afraid that on average they are all better.

But then again, none of those films have a song by Springsteen.
