I find The Battle of the Scheldt (2020) a very difficult film.

Judging by the cover, trailer (2.14min) and the press photos, I expected a completely different film.

I thought I was going to watch a war movie.

Band of Brothers (2001) or The Longest Day (1962) in the setting of the Scheldt.

It became a wartime drama film. I have hardly seen a war film with the actual battle of the Scheldt. The feeling continues to dominate me that I have been watching: War Winter (2008) with a touch of Scheldt, 1917 (2019)/Dunkirk (2017).

Only the beginning of the film contains a mini intro of (the preparation of) the Battle of the Scheldt.

Most of the movie is drama related.

As far as I can read in the comments, the last few minutes of the film show the actual storming of the Sloedam. In other words: This is part of the true battle of the Scheldt.

The Drama of the Scheldt (2020) as title, in my opinion, covers the load better.

After all, the film images of the actual battle could also have been processed in an extended trailer of 10 minutes.

After watching the film I saw the cover, trailer (2.14min) and the press photos again.

The oversized portion of the film is drama related and does not match the above footage.

Especially the subtitles of the trailer seem to have been copied from another film, and really put me on the wrong track. This appears to be the trailer for the remake of A Bridge Too Far (1977).

Unfortunately. Missed opportunity!

Still a strong Dutch-made production. After Zwartboek, Süskind and . the ambition to

Riphagen has already succeeded in making a convincing new film about the Second World War. The approach is a mosaic film of three separate stories that eventually come together. The latter is often quite forced in many films. It's no different here, but it was all in all not too bad.

With such an approach, it is important that the assembly is done correctly and that the transitions are not too abrupt and that they happen at the right time. Also the fact that the three stories are captivating is a plus. Technically also a well-maintained film. The action looked fine. First with the planes, but also the first scenes with that convoy. The raid on the water was also well portrayed.

Finally, more than excellent acting. Very much enjoyed!

Let me start with the positive side.

No Dutch celebrities in the lead roles - or actually not at all, it seems. Well, I haven't watched TV for about ten years now, so I may have missed something with that, but still. Quite a nice and fresh cast, and they certainly don't play very badly. In any case, a wonderful lack of exaggerated star allures and overacting. And it's really great that everyone speaks their own language. That should really happen more often.

Well, the story then. Why did that Eastern Front NSBer have to be dragged in again, and why did the whole storyline of the shot down glider have to be added. It seems to me that those images had already been shot by accident for another film. It has nothing to do with the Battle of the Scheldt.

And the denouement is just as absurd. Well, a lot of shooting and a lot of mud, but every time the 88 fires, something most like legal fireworks follows, and the heroes wipe some dirt from their faces and fight on. Geez, then you really don't understand it at all.

It's not a documentary, I get that. But the poetic freedom that the makers allow themselves here also means that it is no longer a film but a visual fairy tale. Nice pictures, but it has no place in this universe. And then I don't even start about that German gentleman who subtly explains that half of the scenes were accidentally shot the wrong way round (I'll just leave it out for a moment that the uniforms are wrong). Very sloppy, and also very unnecessary.
