Mateus is 18 years old. To give his family a better life in the countryside, the young man accepts a job at a scrapyard in São Paulo for his new boss, Luca. But when he and a few other boys become entangled in the dangerous world of human trafficking, Mateus is forced to choose between working for the man who imprisoned him or risking the future of him and his family.

This film touched me, it was very moving and the next day you still think about what you saw.

Writer and director Alexandre Moratto cast a Brazilian immigrant who worked in a sweatshop for six months. All while conducting investigative interviews with human trafficking survivors.
A gripping story in a documentary style. There is hardly any music in the film, but such silent scenes make the whole thing realistically disturbing. The cast is well composed, and the main character is faced with a moral dilemma. The actual circumstances may have been much more intense, but that would result in an unwatchable film.

A good social realist drama stands or falls with the power of the moral dilemma. For me personally, 'Ladri di biciclette' (1948) and 'Deux jours, une nuit' (2014) are such excellent films in this genre. It also works particularly well in '7 Prisioneiros' (2021) that the viewer is taken into the dilemma of Mateus (Christian Malheiros) when he is always given slightly more privileges than his captured peers. They all ended up in the hands of human trafficker Luca (Rodrigo Santoro), but the man seems to see more in his new protégé. Genuine sympathy or a clever way to play the enslaved against each other? The love-hate relationship between Mateus/Luca is a successful indictment of the cynical powerlessness of human trafficking. Where poverty and crime go together to simply keep their heads above water.
