"10 years ago, they took our planet. Today, we take it back!"
It's been nearly a decade since an alien force occupied the Chicago area. People are held captive in a totalitarian regime and tracked using a GPS that has been inserted into every resident. When a group of resistance fighters tries to regain power piece by piece, it initially seems like an impossible mission, with every move monitored by the authorities watching.

Afterwards I took a short trip to Google, it soon became apparent that I was not the only one who made the link with Cloverfield. This film would really fit perfectly into the Cloverfield universe, it wouldn't surprise me at all if a possible sequel would release that reveal.
Whether they were inspired by Cloverfield, or the less successful third film, they pulled Captive State out of the Cloverfield universe. But the setup, the approach, the open ending, the somewhat deeper genre elaboration of the material ... it feels like a perfect expansion.
The film deals with an alien invasion, but you don't get to see a lot of aliens. They are there, of course, also neatly in full view, but the story is rather that of a revolt against an oppressive regime. Wyatt also dares to push the pace when necessary (which makes for a relatively slow ending) and also dares to leave a lot of questions unanswered.
Visually good, acting also more than decent and although a bit long, captivating from start to finish. The direction is a bit too good, but otherwise a good film. Hopefully the poor box office won't prevent a sequel (or become a cheap streaming sequel).

An unwise bummer this one. Such a great cast, alien invasion.. Should be right up my alley. Been looking forward to this for a year... But what a pile of crap. It didn't matter, it was boring and everything was vague. No likeable character in sight. Had to watch it in 3 parts. He was that bad! Just not digestible in 1 x. Friend had the same problem.

Uhm what, do you have sand in your eyes? This movie was good man! The entire atmosphere throughout the film was very exciting. The story was also very solid with quite a few twists. I do notice that people post here who apparently aren't too bright. The film was not vague or unclear. If you thought so, then you are simply not that smart or you have been sleeping parts. The given moment was quite obvious what was going to happen. Also during the film you could easily make out what everyone was planning on the basis of all the conversations that were had. The film has an average of 6.9 with almost 30,000 votes on IMDB which shows that it is a decent film. A 7.5 for me. Were a great 100 minutes with a nice ending.
