I didn't immediately expect it, but it looked nice, the story appealed to me, the same style, and I think the acting is good. I did find the flashbacks confusing at times and it was not clear to me why Florence had so much trouble with sexuality. I can imagine, but I thought there would be a clear explanation, or did I miss something? I thought she might have been abused by her father, but I'm not sure. I haven't read the book. Maybe I would have known then. The jumps in time at the end were not necessary for me. I liked the ending quite a bit, but I liked the part in the sixties the most, which thankfully is the biggest part. I recently saw the movie "Brooklyn" in which Saoirse also plays the lead role, and I like that movie better and gave it 4 stars. This one gets 3.5*.

The film was mainly seen by Saoirse Ronan who also brought Ladybird that year, which earned her the 3rd of 4 Academy Award nominations. Strong actress who can fascinate me and was therefore curious about this film. In any case, she comes out less well in On Chesil Beach. Her co-star Billy Howle is an uninteresting actor and the couple lacks some chemistry. It doesn't get bad, but I still miss the necessary pit.

It was already mentioned here, the flashbacks take the tempo out of it and are done rather lazily. It all ripples a bit further and you as a viewer are still hungry. That gradually improves, but the film is not really great. The whole has become a beautiful drama of 2 young people who seem to have found each other, but have problems with sex and relationships and react differently.

We could be so free with each other! We could make each other so happy!

But as everyone is slowly learning, that's probably the hardest thing there is, and this movie that I've been lured into by the name of Ronan like everyone else is an overly verbose and tedious proof of that. Worry elevated to an Olympic discipline, uncertainty as a beacon for life, the romance of leading young Werther. And it could have been so beautiful - in which the film very cleverly seeks a parallel with the source material.

Because the film could have been a lot nicer, although the first of these might have been to look for other source material. Atonement was a reasonable success - and a similar dragon as a story - and that must have been the reason to try it again, but the pitcher is going to be watered up to, and this is too far. Whether the book was better, I honestly have some doubts.

Saoirse (I've learned to pronounce that like nag-nag, and if that's true then that's a great prediction for this movie) looks gorgeous in her usual light blue that matches her hair and eyes so beautifully. Her co-star, Billy Howle, only comes across a bit in the 1970s - great casting in itself, because that also fits well with the story. Find an actor for that - someone who radiates discomfort in the deepest fibers of his body and soul. Too bad he only gets his scene after an hour and a half. Had the movie started with that, it might have been something more than a total bust.

Because it shouldn't come as a surprise anymore that that's what the movie is - an utter failure. Unless you find it entertaining to watch two people make each other completely unhappy in a silly way, and take a very, very long time to do so. I'd rather look at the test image if I'm being honest.
