We're only in June, but I have a strong suspicion that I've already seen the worst movie of 2017 with this one. A creepy film that looks like a cheap trash, and also true (yes), for the sake of variety, but once again situated in a ghostly institution, where women are sadistically tortured. The creepiest thing, however, is the fake mustache that the talented (really) James Franco has put on himself (that thing doesn't make you Vincent Price, James, though). Franco who has to be a bit more picky about what he accepts, because he not only plays one of the dubious leading roles, but also shared the direction of this bad product.

Can't go wrong with Franco at the helm, some well-known celebrities from previous decades will have thought, because in the stereotypical supporting roles we recognize Eric Roberts, Lori Singer, Tim Blake Nelson and Josh Duhamel. The lead role is for the beautiful and unknown Gallerani who seems to have been hired mainly because they were looking for someone who wants to take off their clothes without any problems. If you didn't give up prematurely, after all those goosebumps moments , at the predictable end, you may also encounter some very unsavory and gory effects. Incomprehensibly bad all in all, so all in all, a real flop.

Mediocre.

A film that is somewhat reminiscent of A Dangerous Method, but with some Eyes Wide Shut elements and a Pit & the Pendulum reference. That in itself could still produce a nice mix, but the result feels a bit too simple.

The film mainly looks a bit cheap. It's not that they don't try to create an atmosphere, but the attempts miss their target and the weight of the acting doesn't help much either. It all feels very serious, where it is actually just a fairly kitsch story, without too much depth.

Fortunately, the film still has its own face, despite all the references. It is not your average horror work or exhausted genre film, Franco and Romanowsky really try to set up something of their own, it is just a pity that the result is not immediately inspiring. It's doable for once, but will soon be forgotten.

2.0*

Dramatic.

I still find it quite remarkable how directors who have spent their entire lives in front of the camera and on a set can still come up with these kinds of films if they take control of the production themselves. Perhaps he alone is not to blame for this, but the writer of the script may also scratch the back of his head a number of times.

We follow an environment that takes us to Rosewood, the infamous psychiatric hospital. Online I thought this would be some sort of biography film, but it soon becomes clear that Franco prefers to do his own thing. And of course he has to be a part of that too. In doing so, he arrogantly puts himself in a role that does not suit him at all. Maybe he wanted to play the villain sometime. Then I hope this is the last time.

While the first half still remains reasonably within the rails, but mainly poorly acted and strange, the film flies fatally in the second half by mixing cult influences in the whole. That's the point where the film goes from boring to completely stupid in its entirety. The fact that Franco has managed to convince so many of his acting friends, who have made a good career separately from each other, to play with them says a lot about them.

I thought it was a messy, rushed whole. The concept of brainwashing is hardly understood. They even completely skipped the concept of a tension curve. Movies like this raise concerns about Franco's future and what he's going to direct. If I have to believe the approach of this film, it is mostly left with a good concept. This is apparently too much to ask.
