I was quite shocked by this film and I can understand that the harsh existence, with punishments bordering on medieval conditions, on top of the unnatural isolation from the outside world and the brakes on their sexual development, made young women doubt, torment and decide "that there is more..."

In addition, I was not specifically aware that papal decrees were the cause of the reduction in the number of nuns and I rather associated this with the greater social opportunities that women were given from those years onwards (recognition, education, professions, independence, etc.)

Interesting, and the film does surprise. Where he had largely focused on the specific case of the girl Cathleen, he puts the emphasis at the end and in the epilogue on the consequences of the Council in general.

"Novitatie" may have some weak moments, but overall it is an entertaining film.

Novitiate tells the story of a young woman who wants to become a nun in the 1960s and struggles with her vocation during the novitiate, while also seeing how the order must undergo the changes of the Second Vatican Council.

The film is in many ways very solid and yet contains a number of clichés. The strict mother superior, the girls who are forced by their families to become nuns and a lesbian scene... If I am to believe reactions from sisters, the film is very exaggerated in portraying the strictness, punishment and self-mortification.

Still, I didn't think it was a bad film. I think it shows very well why the girls entered the convent and to a large extent also the difficulties that came with it. The best aspect of the film was without a doubt - although I thought it was a bit too strict - the performance of Melissa Leo as the mother superior.

Especially during the announcement of Vaticanum II it becomes clear what a huge impact the changes have had on monastic life. And when you hear that nuns are suddenly deprived of their special status as brides of Christ it is not surprising that so many leave.

I find it difficult to assess what Maggie Betts had in mind. On the one hand, it seems as if she has a great deal of understanding for the girls' religiosity and for the Mother Superior's desire for tradition. The archbishop who is super enthusiastic about Vaticanum II is also portrayed as a really nasty person. But at the same time, there also seems to be an indictment of monastic life and of the teaching on sexuality.

Excellent film in which a girl decides to study in a convent and become a nun. A beautiful story that takes place in the mid-1960s with a major reformation within the church in the background. The film gives an intriguing look into life as a nun in a convent and also the motives/motivations of the characters without really passing judgment. Good cast, beautiful film.
