Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle plot

"The game has evolved."

During detention at school, four teenagers find an old game console with the mysterious game Jumanji in it. They decide to play one game, but are then literally sucked into the game and end up in the jungle. One advantage: they are in the bodies of their chosen characters. In their new bodies, the foursome must now try to win the game, because only when they complete Jumanji can they leave the game and return to the real world.

If you've seen part 1, part 2 is disappointing. I miss the mystique and humor of part 1. Contiguous predictable action and sometimes cringe-inducing. Good movie for 10 year olds.

Before I go to watch the sequel on Wednesday I set it up again and like it a bit better than last time. The first time was on the plane and then the viewing experience is always something different, partly due to the cramped seats and the engine noise. I still think the original is more atmospheric, but this is a fun adventure film. But it doesn't feel like a real Jumanji.

That is mainly because the film has to move with the times. How atmospheric the board game was, how hip is the replacement video game. It makes the film a completely different experience, because because the protagonists are sucked into the game, they really end up in the jungle. Whereas in the original I really liked the jungle-city combination. I also absolutely missed the feeling that it was a game. Of course you have certain features that refer to games such as your lives and NPCs, but the tension that comes with a dice is nowhere to be found.

Fortunately, the four adult protagonists make the most of it, none of which stands out or stands out. Nice to see Johnson as a vulnerable character, although he still has no weaknesses. Hart is funny as a sidekick and Jack Black always gets the laughs on his side. Gillan is the least funny, but if you have dance fighting as a skill with such a body then I'm happy too.

The action is kid-friendly and rather staged with the occasional ridiculous find like the helicopter, but it exudes so much fun that it's forgiven. However, two hours is a bit long. Leave out the love nonsense and the too long epilogue and he was a little better served.

Sometimes you go and watch a movie when you already know it's better not to. Usually you also regret that afterward (couldn't I have used my time better?). Sometimes you are positively surprised. The latter was the case with Jumanji. I have not seen the original and that may have an impact on my review. The analogy (especially in the beginning) with the Breakfast Club is nicely chosen. You can map the characters one on one to the members of the Breakfast Club . I was afraid it would become a repeat of lame humor after that, but that wasn't the case either. I'm not much of a comedian, but I seriously liked this funny one. There were plenty of other elements in there too: action, some romance, some life lessons (yes, the Hollywood way). I thought the acting was surprisingly good. The actors make a perfect blend of their original personalities and the traits of the avatar they have become. And they can sometimes switch between them at lightning speed and completely believable. There was also character development in the film (no, it's not a drama where the protagonists go through an emotional rollercoaster, but the characters are undeniably different at the end of the film than at the beginning....something that most comedies do at all. does not happen). Some jokes repeat (as noted above) but I found it to work really well this time (sometimes jokes get bland with repetition, but sometimes it just enhances the humor). The atmosphere of a video game is also perfectly preserved. Downsides: the villain is a bit over the top and the villain's helpers don't evolve at all. You could have gotten more out of that. I really enjoyed this movie and am curious about the original. For now at least four deserved stars for this successful remake.
