"Back on screen for the first time in a year!"
Danny Fisher (Presley) works as an assistant at a nightclub owned by underworld figure Maxie Fields (Matthau). One evening, on behalf of Fields, he climbs the stage as a singer and it turns out to be a resounding success. Danny manages to work as a singer at a competitor, in the nightclub 'King Creole". Fields (Matthau) is not happy about this, because he wants Fisher in his own club.

After the good "Jailhouse Rock" movie, this is an excellent sequel with another excellent Elvis Presley. Here too, the story is quite nice and fascinating, the cast is good (Walter Matthau, among others), Elvis Presley steals the show and the songs are at their best. It is also, I believe, the longest film featuring Elvis Presley. The many films that Elvis Presley made after this all cannot match these two films with him and are all a bit bland.

Elvis always wanted to play in movies and he didn't do badly at first. He had a style in the '50s like James Dean and Marlon Brando, though he would never reach their level. But it wasn't bad either. The disadvantage was that his film ambition was never really taken seriously. Also with King Creole, which was normally intended for James Dean, the film was adapted to Elvis with more songs. After the war it would become all 'Elvis films' with the intention of portraying him and selling songs. He also had to remain the biggest star of his films, so that (especially later on) the Colonel turned down roles from well-known films.
King Creole shows a pre-military service Elvis when he made his best movies. 14 days after making this film he enlisted in the army and would return to a changed world of music. Elvis plays one of his best roles and almost equals James Dean. The film itself is of less quality. Good story and interesting in itself, but nothing really special. And in terms of music, it is no more than his acts in the King Creole. With actually the title track that really stands out.

This is the fourth Elvis movie I watch in chronological order. Undoubtedly the best so far. It is a film that builds on the tension of 2 generations as James Dean did and following on from the discovery of the teenage audience in the 1950s. In addition, I think that the film also subscribes to the noir tradition that was gradually coming to an end. The character of Elvis experiences an inner conflict that also finds its way to the outside world ... there is the presence of femme fatale Caroly Jones who in the best noir tradition will come to a violent end ... there is the good girl Dolores Heart … and with Michael Curtiz as director and Russel Harlan for photography we have 2 toppers who have already proven themselves in noir b&w photography … and here they do it again. Story-wise, it's all fairly simple, but still developed enough to keep it interesting. The film is quite long (2 hours) but in fact the drama takes an hour and a half like the average film of the time and on top of that you get a great soundtrack that is story-wise integrated. In terms of drama, music and entertainment, this film is as good as it gets compared to its peers from the 1950s. Michael Curtiz was reportedly delighted with Elvis' performance and who are we to argue with him. Unfortunately, the great film career of Elvis predicted by him did not materialize. But that had other causes than Elvis' talent.
