Khartoum plot

"Where the Nile divides, the great Cinerama adventure begins!"

Sudan, 1881. Muslim leader Mahdi calls for a bloody uprising aimed at destroying the Egyptian soldiers, British officers and their Sudanese auxiliaries in a so-called holy war. British Prime Minister Gladstone, however, refuses to launch a military aid campaign. He only sends the wayward General Charles Gordon to Khartoum to evacuate the city. That fails miserably and this is the beginning of a siege that will last ten months. Gladstone still refuses any help and when Colonel Stewart tries to break through the blockades with a steamboat, it ends in a massacre.

Saw it again yesterday, but in my memory as a teenager it was better then than I rate it now. Quite reasonable all in all, but could have been much better. In itself it all looks nice, but the budget clearly had its limitations, because not everything was done with the spectacle scenes. For example, they are working towards a smashing apotheosis (the final attack on Khartoum), which is, however, unraveled in a few minutes. Instead of crushing action, there's a lot of dialogue, which will quickly lead to the label of boring for many. What helps is a strong role from the unrecognizable Olivier as the wrong but passionate Mahdi. Heston, the other lead actor, is not a great actor but he can do just fine here, and is less irritating than the bombastic music which implies a certain grandeur that the film itself barely delivers.

Quite mediocre, just a 3*. Visually this is very beautiful and spectacular, in the best tradition of the epic large-scale historical film, with large-scale war scenes with British people on camels and Arabs on horses, and it all looks beautifully exotic.
Khartoum tells the story of the Sudanese jihadist "Al Mahdi", who is preparing a siege and massacre on Khartoum. Veteran soldier "Chinese" Gordon is tasked by the British government to evacuate the city but he ultimately chooses to defend the city . Khartoum has a lot of dialogue, but not the most pleasant: the history lesson is dryly rattled off, making this quite a solid chunk. Olivier as the Mahdi is also unconvincing; a real Arab actor would have been much more believable. Not a woman to be seen in the film. Very nicely filmed, but below expectations for me.

A large-scale production about a legendary conflict, fantastic locations and a perfect cast on paper: the King of the Epic is present in the form of Charlton Heston and the most prominent British actor of his generation, Laurence Olivier, can enter into an acting duel with him. Heston plays British (!) General Charles Gordon, a folk hero since his heroic fight against insurgents in the Taiping Rebellion, when he is ordered to evacuate Khartoum before the fanatical followers of Muhammad Ahmad - a self-proclaimed Mahdi - overrun the city and massacre its inhabitants . With Ralph Richardson, Michael Hordern and Nigel Green in important supporting roles, you expect a better film than this. One of the culprits is Basil Dearden, the director from the Ealing studios, who fails to give the mass scenes the energy and conviction that are needed. Extras participate half-heartedly, except when they appear in close-up, and soldiers literally fall down in droves in fight scenes. A battle in the desert is even downright amateurish: location shots of the advancing armies in the sun-drenched desert alternate with ostentatious studio shots by Heston in which it is almost night. Despite these shortcomings, this is a somewhat romanticized reconstruction of a key moment in British and African history and the acting - apart from Olivier's bizarre accent - is fine.
