A deserved classic, although that may not be entirely clear from my appreciation. I really doubted between 3.5 and 4 stars and finally decided not to give Soylent Green the benefit of the doubt. The film is very outdated and offers hardly any suspense, but the setting is oh-so-good. This is again wonderful science fiction that, unlike many dystopian films, takes radical social changes into account. I thoroughly enjoy all the dialogues within Soylent Green about the curiosity for simple, logical things for us, such as fresh food, soap or a walk in nature. It will be very boring for people with little empathy. To me, it obscures the run-of-the-mill plot investigating a murder that ultimately reveals something much bigger. Soylent Green is 100% food for SF enthusiasts. If you're not, the movie will be long-winded, boring, and sentimental. I myself see very interesting themes here, including some unexpected ones like cannibalism and euthanasia. In a dystopian setting, the viewer is forced to look at it differently. Visually, Soylent Green is not very special, although it does contain some nice pictures. The ending is pretty strong. Especially when Heston starts the 'chase'. By the way, I had the idea that Charlton Heston did his best to imitate Henry Fonda. Good movie.

I first saw this film 20 years ago and it touched me deeply, later revised a number of times. Why? To polish the solutions that people came up with to keep each other alive and to wipe them away. The terrible image of the hungry people on the stairs is not so different with 100 refugees from Calais to Dover in a rubber boat to reach their greatest hope of England. Also the lost hope that growing scarce food in bulk in a cheaper way can feed people.

The increasingly strict measures to take care of your own public health. The pleasure of people who are not bothered by it.

Captivating and predictive. Only very rich crabs from the barrel were allowed to taste what it once was like.

Well-made dystopian film, after the book Make Room! Make Room! by writer Harry Harrison. The story takes place in this year, it may be slow, but that more than makes up for the atmosphere of the film, especially that green haze and how humans have destroyed everything themselves. The cast including Charlton Heston, Chuck Conners and Edward G. Robinson play their part well and this cult film is definitely worth watching.
