Slight setback. Now I knew that the monster would not look like, but I was especially curious about the rest of the film such as the time frame or the processing of a nuclear trauma. And that is far too short. Precisely those small moments when the population lives in fear, flees et cetera are the best moments, but they are not present enough. It is also often said too literally that one must stop the nuclear tests. Could that not have been processed more subtly?
However, the central scene where Tokyo is being laid ashes was filmed very strongly. At night, so that doll (or man in a suit?) does not stand out and there were occasionally very nice black and white shots. 2.5*.

I mostly knew - the Japanese - Godzilla as that kid-friendly mutant dinosaur, who fights with other Power Rangers bad guys in a cardboard city and then does happy dances. With that in mind, this first Godzilla - Gojira from 1954 - is quite different from a Godzilla vs The Sea Monster, just to name a few. Agree, this film also has its clumsy moments here and there, but in general this first appearance of Godzilla is remarkably serious, dramatic and melancholy in tone. The monster is still a real threat and actually causes a lot of misery. In contrast to his American colleague King Kong, there is little sympathetic to the beast in the first Godzilla. He thunders through the city unabashedly, destroying everything in his path, resulting in countless deaths. Yet a contrast to a dancing Barney the dinosaur, who would later become Godzilla.

As is often the case with these kinds of films, you have to have some patience if you watch the film purely for the monster. Because this first film mainly builds up a lot of tension. That piece works surprisingly well - even though you know the end result, the mystery surrounding ships disappearing and large footprints being found is interestingly presented. The characters we get to know are not particularly memorable, although the human drama is also done quite well. It keeps the movie from getting bored when the monster is nowhere to be seen. Once the monster does show itself, this also produces remarkably strong moments. As mentioned, it sometimes has something clumsy, but partly due to the black and white use and the many scenes at night you barely feel the campy 'man in a suit walking through a cardboard city', this was only embraced and emphasized in the later parts. Also props for the sound design, mostly consisting of loud thumps and the characteristic screams of the monster. Atmospheric - and remarkably serious - monster film, this.

4 stars.

Gojira can really be called such a classic monster film, the whole is good but sometimes also very clumsy, but what do you want with a film of almost 70 years and we who are now spoiled with all that CGI violence. The story is well thought out because the film is about nuclear tests that created Gojira and Japan itself had Hiroshima and Nagasaki on their minds less than 10 years earlier. And then Gojira looks fine for that time and with a budget of $275,000 you can't expect more, but that should certainly not spoil the fun. I myself have the Citirion bluray version of it, for all those other film nerds check it out on zavvi.nl there it is for sale check it out.
