Quite a monstrosity of a film; as Esteban describes above, it is too difficult to find even the slightest bit of sympathy in this movie. Klein's character is truly awful beyond words, and all attempts to make the romance between him and Sobieski seem even remotely genuine fail miserably. Sobieski also comes across as unsympathetic as a cheating girl. I actually loathe her in this film. The only one who was actually sympathetic in this film is completely dismissed. A fine performance by Hartnett, then.

So the problem is the script; it makes absolutely no sense. The characters are portrayed particularly poorly, and that twist half an hour before the end when it turned out that Sobieski had cancer just doesn't sit right with me. Naturally followed by Klein's egocentric actions, it's hard to empathize with him even remotely. Because of this, the ending becomes a real monstrosity too; I mean... he hurt her and a flower makes everything better? Give me a break!

1.5* and don't think back to this too much.

Here on Earth

I saw this movie once in the past, but good heavens, how sappy and overly sentimental this is. The film reminds me of A Walk To Remember, but is actually inferior in every way. The characters are ridiculous, the script is mediocre—I needed a bucket for some of the dialogue—and the music is disgusting. I don't know what Hartnett and Klein are doing, and they probably don't either. The dramatic twist could have brought some emotion and sharpness, but it only gets worse. The bright spot is Lelee Sobieski, who at least manages to convey some genuine emotion.

Leelee Sobieski.

One of the few actresses you can find by just her first name. The one we all know from that one scene It needn't be a costume but name another film she's in—no, not this one, of course. And why? She certainly doesn't act badly, with a little help from the camera and lighting she is drop-dead gorgeous, and in her later roles she becomes even more beautiful. Just try explaining it to me.

This isn't exactly a very successful film, but that is more due to the drawn-out story—which is well told in itself, because I didn't see the direction it takes coming.

The cast is otherwise all set, with a somewhat small role for Hartnett, Klein playing the flawed hero creditably, and even Bruce Greenwood as Rade Šerbedžija's successor. Oh, I see you can find him using just his first name too.
