"The inside story of London after dark."
Harry Fabian (Widmark) is a petty con man. He meets ex-wrestling champion Gregorius. With the support of Gregorius, he wants to become the organizer of the fighting. With that, he invades the domain of gangster boss Kristo, who controls these fights and is also the son of Gregorius

NL title: The Scavengers of the Night 
Still plenty to enjoy in this noir set in London's semi-underworld, where an incorrigible wheeler-dealer seizes yet another chance to finally rake in the big money. This Harry, with his childlike enthusiasm for his own wild schemes, is at times a bit tiring to watch; it is a wonder his sweetheart hasn't shown him the door long ago, but oh well.
The film is stolen by the supporting roles. First and foremost, of course, there is old Gregory, a retired Greco-Roman wrestler who barely speaks English and who, if necessary, will even put on the gear himself to give his opponents a hard time. His fight with The Strangler is therefore the absolute highlight of this film: what a display of strength, literally. Furthermore, Herbert Lom as Kristo, son of the aforementioned man-thrower, and Sullivan as the sleazy nightclub owner are also on top form.
The story is reasonably engaging to follow, although this viewer did frequently wonder what was so special about Harry's 'discovery' to throw himself into the world of wrestling as well. Moreover: due to his unsympathetic behavior throughout the entire film, the ending, in which the born con artist cannot or will not escape his fate, was one of: you were warned, boy! All in all, certainly a decent film, but not much more than that.

Excellent film about a con artist who sees opportunities everywhere but needs to raise money first. The plot is perhaps somewhat predictable, but as the story progresses, it becomes increasingly exciting. The wrestling match is also thrilling. The hyped-up atmosphere (in which the music plays a significant part) and the main character both reminded me of Uncut Gems.

A standout performance by Widmark as a con artist with grand ambitions. You could accuse him of overacting here, but Harry is certainly one of his very best roles. It is also a very tragic character for whom you can feel little sympathy. He has no qualms about emotionally exploiting people for his plans. An important noir with a strong but very bleak script that expressed Dassin's negative feelings following his deportation from the US.
