Rebecca Daly has a rich imagination. As a result, quite a few moments unintentionally worked on my laughing muscles. Okay, enough sarcasm for now.

This was quite a pleasant surprise. I was prejudiced and initially did not expect to finish it, but that turned out to be quite a pleasant surprise.

The negatives are not hard to find. The main one is that certain key developments in terms of plot and character are not camouflaged at all, which sometimes gives you the feeling of watching a soap opera. And that is quite strange for a film that wants to be hyper realistic (and is not entirely free of transgressive material).

But hey, the flaws are forgivable. First of all because of two excellent lead actors. Furthermore, this 'small' film also has its charm, precisely because of that minimalist approach.

It's certainly not Red Road (2006) or even Tyrannosaur (2011), but that doesn't have to spoil the 'fun'. Almost 3*

A mother has left her son with his father and has not seen him again. Then, many years later, she meets a similar street boy and takes him in as a kind of compensation. In itself, an intriguing idea for a film. And the film certainly has enough in it in the beginning to be a pretty good film. The atmosphere is fine, the acting is good and the story is captivating and makes you wonder how it will continue. But gradually the story drops stitches and there are illogical scenes. And those clearly detract from the story. Finally, the ending is also unsatisfactory because you are left with too many questions as a viewer. If the story and the characters had been better developed, it could have been a really good film. But this film, or is it the director, left that out. Quite a shame.

Margaret [Rachel Griffiths] is still grieving the death of her son Patrick [Patrick Cullen] after years of being missing and the end of her marriage to Matt [Michael McElhatton] when she encounters a street urchin [Barry Keoghan] who reminds her so much of Patrick that she decides to take him in. But the bond between these two people who have been scarred by life is marked by complex emotions that neither of them knows how to deal with. An emotionally charged drama with strong performances from Griffith and Keoghan, but it is an oft-told story that unfortunately offers few surprises.
