Sans Toit ni Loi is the third film I see by Agnès Varda. Although each film is from a different decade, Varda's style is recognizable. It is often sober, sometimes tending to the minimalist.

The style here fits the subject well. It makes the life of the stray, in which no one seems to have a genuine interest, just a little more gray and less pleasant. Sandrine Bonnaire plays an excellent leading role. I felt a little sorry for her at times. That hopeless life is boring and monotonous and Varda also makes that known by repeating certain things.

The level is very constant. Few real highs, no lows, but above average due to the aforementioned things.

3.5*

In the review!

The release policy in the Netherlands in terms of classics is still deplorable in terms of supply, but very occasionally a film turns up that is interesting enough to purchase.

The French countryside in the winter of 1985, cold, gray and barren, and here Sandrine Bonnaire wanders around and in a kind of semi-documentary style we see the people she has contact with for a short or longer period of time.

Golden Lion in 1985 and the film still stands firm.

Sans Toit ni Loi tells the story in semi-documentary style about the last weeks of a young stray. However, why she started wandering around is never clear and the people she encounters know very little about her.

I didn't expect a film with such an unusual storytelling method to be so pleasant to watch. It all worked pretty well too. The variety of the stray woman's life, the interviews with the bystanders and the housekeeper who tells her thoughts directly to the camera. Somehow it is a kind of precursor to what Martin Scorsese would do in Goodfellas.

For once, the film shows something different from the paradisiacal Provence, which reminds us of France. In Sans Toit ni Loi everything is filthy, dilapidated and desolate. Yet the landscapes still have an appeal and Agnès Varda knows how to use the desolation of the locations very well. The classical music and (French) rock also fit very well with the era and the tone.

In the end, we still don't know why the girl went roaming. Varda never gives a judgment or steers in a certain direction and we as viewers do not know it any more than the 'interviewees'.
