“You should move to a small town, somewhere the rule of law still exists. You won't survive here. You are not a wolf, and this is a land of wolves now.”

Sicario remains an intense, oppressive and strong thriller. Craftsmanship by Villeneuve, Deakins and actors Blunt, Del Toro and Brolin. From the very first moment, the film takes you in a hold, and then never lets go. The spectacular opening scene is the prelude to a chilling film with nail-biting tension, but fortunately also some quiet moments in which the actors show what they are worth.

To round up a drug cartel, Kate (Blunt), Alejandro (Del Toro) and Matt (Brolin) are after a mysterious drug lord, and all three have their own motives that they keep hidden from the rest. It is clear that these motives get in each other's way. Especially the (more than personal) motives of Alejandro provide a goosebumps moment at the end. The film has some chilling scenes such as when Kate, Alejandro and Matt drive into Juárez in a convoy to pick up a prisoner, and the tension builds until it erupts on the highway. Together with the tunnel scene at the end, these are absolute highlights, and Deakins in particular shows craftsmanship here with his fabulous camera work. Compliments also for the atmospheric music, which at certain moments provides extra tension.

In the review.

With the Trumpian policy that America is pursuing, the film is still relevant four years later. The problems at the border are presented in a razor-sharp picture, not so much the migration problem, but the 'war on drugs'.

The 'war on drugs' grabs you by the throat. From the opening scene of the movie to the end, with del Toro giving Blunt another chance to kill him. A chance for all the suffering he caused Blunt. Awesome. As my neighbor described above IH88, the scene leading up to the shooting on the highway is one of the highlights of the film. What a tension, chillingly portrayed.

Blunt, del Toro and Brolin steal the show with the three of them. They make this film, with its tension and atmosphere, a total picture. Of course Villeneuve's directing is also there.

Next up will be Blade Runner 2049. Also from Villeneuve. Curious to see if it will also be as strong in the revision.
