The story in this film isn't particularly interesting, and the script isn't particularly well-written. Lily Tomlin's antics didn't captivate me one bit, and the rest of the characters remain stuck in their flat characterizations.

A remarkable performance by Lily Tomlin as the grandmother with a troubled past who tries to help her granddaughter out of her predicament with experience and courage.

A lot of spicy dialogues and situations and unabashed remarks spice up this film, which plays up the element of surprise beautifully, especially through the special character of "granny," but then, as we become more familiar with her performance, it weakens somewhat.

Nevertheless, a smooth film with appreciated performances from Sam Elliott and Marcia Gay Harden.

Films starring older actresses are few and far between, but this comedy-drama is a fantastic vehicle for Lily Tomlin. She plays Elle, the lesbian mother and grandmother whose relationship with her daughter [Marcia Gay Harden] is severely strained. When her current relationship with Olivia [Judy Greer] collapses, partly due to her bitterness, she is devastated. Then, her granddaughter Sage [Julia Garner] suddenly asks her for help paying for an abortion. Elle and Sage travel together, visiting various people to raise money for the procedure, and in the process, Elle is forced to confront her past and the choices she has made.

Tomlin shines in the title role, making the most of the sharp situations and dialogue, especially in her confrontation with Sage's carefree boyfriend, Nat Wolff. Sam Elliott is strong as Elle's ex still grappling with their shared past, and Lauren Tom is perfect as the doctor at the abortion clinic. But the film reaches its comedic and dramatic high point when Marcia Gay Harden appears, building to a surprisingly moving finale.
