In the films that I have seen of her, Kirin Kiki has always made the necessary impression on me. This is also the case in this film about a middle-aged man who plays around with a dorayaki stall and receives unexpected help from an old woman. With the necessary success as a result. Of course there is always someone who comes to spoil things. A subtle film with a sensitive story without frills and first-class acting.

It's still amazing how the Japanese can make small masterpieces around their food culture. For example, 'An' (2015) is a loving ode to dorayakis (cookies with bean paste) as a kind of way people get a second chance in life. Whether it concerns ex-delinquent Sentaro (Masatoshi Nagase), or seventy-year-old Tokue (Kirin Kiki) who responds to his vacancy. Somewhere it clicks between the two outsiders, but there is also still the fear of the judgment of those others. Especially when Tokue carries a tragic secret that could make her a pariah in Japanese society. 'An' (2015) is also so wonderfully minimalistic because it mainly takes place around the small bakery, while the characters are mainly busy preparing dishes. Yet director Naomi Kawase knows how to take the seemingly everyday to almost magical heights in a subtle, poetic way. Small observations and reflections on life. It makes 'An' (2015) a contemplative film with a warm heart.

Sentarô [Masatoshi Nagase] is the taciturn, somewhat petulant manager of a small pancake shop. When 76-year-old Tokue [Kirin Kiki] asks one day if she can come and work for Senatarô, it takes him a long time to convince him to hire her. Although Tokue has a condition that prevents her from using her fingers properly, she proves to be a master at making the bean filling (the 'An' from the title) for the pancakes. The compliments from the customers clearly do Sentarô good, but when the shop owner's wife [Miyoko Asada] discovers a secret about Tokue's past, Sentarô is faced with a difficult choice. A thoughtfully paced psychological drama over three generations (there's also a lonely teenager [Kyara Uchida] who finds a safe haven in the flang shop) is excellently acted, with a starring role for the captivating Kiki. The time Kawase takes to express the story and the underlying thoughts and feelings sometimes tests patience, but it's worth it.
