G.I. Blues plot

"Elvis scores... a singing triumph... and a romantic hit!"

Private Tulsa McLean (Elvis Presley) is one of the many American soldiers stationed in West Germany. Together with his army mates Cookie (Robert Ivers) and Rick, they form a band and their dream is to have their own nightclub. They already have their eye on a nightclub but are still missing $300 for the lease. When they hear of a bet made by two army casanovas, they decide to bet all their money. The aim is to conquer Lili (Juliet Prowse), a club dancer who has not yet been able to conquer anyone. However, when one of the casanova's is unexpectedly transferred, they risk losing all their money. There is only one option left and that is for Tulsa to take the vacant spot.

Above average Elvis film that mainly relies on the songs. These are very strong. Prowse also pulls it all up just that little bit. Legendary is of course the puppet theater scene. For the fans, this film is one of the Elvis top 10.

Not his best, but one of the best movies with Presley.

I have been able to see this more often in the cinema as well as on TV and DVD without getting bored.

I can't rewatch most of his other films, except for Flaming Star, Love me Tender and King Creole.

Great songs too.

I don't really think Presley and Prowse are a match, but they play well.

Airy comedy with humor that doesn't exactly fly high, but it is entertaining. In terms of level, it is certainly not inferior to the bulk of that time. It does have an advantage with the nice songs that are incorporated in it. For Elvis, this was his first full-blooded comedy of his film career and he is doing very well. It's not for everyone to star in a comedy. He had a talent for it, after all. Of course you can ask yourself some questions about the way he is brought to the public: militarized clean cut all American boy. Quite a contrast to the hint of rock'n roll rebellion that hung around him in his 3 previous films (we shouldn't talk about Love me Tender here because that was a historical drama). The production could not resist playfully referring to this contradiction with the scene in which the jukebox blasts Elvis' version of Blue Suede Shoes. The café is immediately turned upside down , resulting in a brawl and broken furniture.

The cast is pretty ok besides Elvis. Only I agree with the users here who are not such a fan of Juliet Prowse. When I read that she passed the screen tests against actresses such as Dolores Hart (2 times previously opposite Elvis) and Ursula Andress ... then I think they chose Juliet because of her excellent dancing skills. A double-edged sword.

The subtext of Elvis in the army - a much discussed real life event - also contributes to the viewing pleasure. Even though there is not a single location shot with Elvis incorporated in the film. There are shots on location, but only a stand-in is used where Elvis is concerned.
