Star Trek: Picard plot

Picard led a mission to rescue the Romulans from Romulus. However, tragedy struck, causing him to stop at Starfleet and retire to his vineyard. Now the Romulans are conducting experiments on people who have been Borg. One of those people is Dahj. She escapes and comes into contact with Picard.

Seizoen 1 en 2 vond ik vermakelijk, maar seizoen 3 is voor mij een trip down memory Lane...Heerlijk! Een genot om te te zien hoe de karakters uit mijn favoriete jeugdserie weer terugkomen, ouder zijn geworden en tegelijkertijd nog zo herkenbaar zijn! Fantastisch.

I found seasons 1 and 2 entertaining, but season 3 is a trip down memory lane for me...Lovely! It's a pleasure to see how the characters from my favorite childhood series come back, have aged and are still so recognizable at the same time! Fantastic.

Zo slecht als het eerste seizoen was (en dat tweede schijnt ook bar weinig soeps te zijn) zo steengoed is dit 3e en kennelijk laatste seizoen van Picard. Alle registers worden opengetrokken. Het ziet er niet alleen piekfijn uit allemaal maar de acteurs zijn enthousiast en het script is verassend goed nu. Aardige toevoegingen zijn het snoepje dat de dochter van La Forge speelt en vooral de uitstekend acterende en charmante Ed Speleers. Verdimme ik had niet eens door dat ik hem ooit zag in Eragon. Hij is enorm gegroeid als acteur! En wie had gedacht dat dit seizoen eventjes een masterclass script schrijven ten beste zou geven. Het roer is duidelijk met vaste hand overgenomen van de prutsers die de eerste twee verkwanseld hadden. De karakters hebben allemaal genoeg "agency" (zeg maar genoeg te doen) inclusief Picard zelf, er is humor, vaart en zat actie en spanning. De enige minpuntjes zijn: -dat er nog steeds gevloekt wordt, is gewoon niet Star Trek; -de cliche's: uiteraard moet alles en iedereen weer uit de mottenballen worden gehaald en de wereld moet weer worden gered. Al met al een zeer waardige afsluiter, mocht dit echt de laatste keer zijn om die Next Generation crew uit de jaren 90 te zien want ja ze zijn toch echt wel in de zestig allemaal, minstens...

As bad as the first season was (and the second also seems to be very poor), this 3rd and apparently last season of Picard is as rock-solid. All registers are pulled open. Not only does it all look great, but the actors are enthusiastic and the script is surprisingly good now. Nice additions are the candy that plays La Forge's daughter and especially the excellent acting and charming Ed Speleers. Damn I didn't even realize I ever saw him in Eragon. He has grown tremendously as an actor!

And who would have thought that this season would give a short script writing masterclass. The rudder has clearly been taken over with a firm hand from the bunglers who had squandered the first two. The characters all have enough "agency" (say enough to do) including Picard himself, there is humor, pace and plenty of action and tension.

The only downsides are:

-that there's still swearing just isn't Star Trek;

-the clichés: of course everything and everyone must be taken out of the mothballs and the world must be saved again.

All in all a very worthy closing, should this really be the last time to see those Next Generation crew from the 90s because yes they are all in their sixties, at least...
