Portals to Hell plot
The ancient Romans believed that Lake Avernus on the Bay of Naples was a gateway to the underworld used by both Hercules and Aeneas. Likewise, Mount Etna was seen by medieval Sicilians as a gateway to hell, although it seems likely that their beliefs were influenced to some extent by their ancient predecessors, who believed it sat atop the serpent-like monster Typhon. Jack Osbourne and Katrina Weidman investigate the world's most sinister haunted locations that they suspect are gateways to the spirit world.
