Due to the writers' strike that ravaged the film and TV industry in late 2007 and early 2008, Supernatural's third season consists of just 16 episodes.
The makers seem to have let go of the visual style of the previous two seasons. That does not result in an ugly style, but it is a shame. In addition, the first episode, The Magnificent Seven, is a bit messy and things go way too fast. Fortunately, the series quickly picks up again. In The kids are alright we see an interesting relationship between Dean and his ex's son and in Sin City Dean learns a thing or two during a conversation with a demon. A Very Supernatural Christmas, with its nostalgic opener and lurid imagery, is memorable. As well as Mystery Spot.
It is striking that the humor has taken a more prominent place, which I could not always appreciate. The episodes are again bursting with references to popular culture. For example, Jus in Bello is a tribute to John Carpenters Assault on Precinct 13 and reality TV is ridiculed in the somewhat bland Ghostfacers.
We get to know two new characters. Ruby, a demon who seems to be on the side of the brothers, and the attractive Bela, a British lady who trades in occult objects and will become a big problem for the brothers. Personally, I thought Bela and Ruby were two entertaining additions, but the fanbase criticism was so damning that the roles were toned down in later seasons.
Finally, the relationship between Sam and Dean is deepened further and further – an aspect in which the series has become excellent in the meantime.
