Supernatural plot

Supernatural is about the Winchester brothers who fight supernatural evil. They take over the task of their father John, who started this to avenge the death of his wife. Thanks to their father, Sam and Dean grow up as demon hunters. In each episode, Dean and Sam solve a mystery by dealing with a supernatural adversary. Mysteries usually revolve around evil spirits, but vampires, werewolves and other demons must also be defeated.

Het tweede seizoen van Supernatural is een slag beter dan het eerste. Niet alleen hebben Padalecki en Ackles hun personages beter in de vingers, ook wordt voorzichtig afgestapt van het monster-van-de-week-principe. De schrijvers laten echter hier en daar wat steekjes vallen. Sommige afleveringen beginnen wat onhandig, waardoor je het idee krijgt dat je het een en ander gemist hebt. (De bedoelingen van de makers zijn wel duidelijk, maar het voelt wat geforceerd aan.) Bovendien doorzie je vrij snel het trucje dat de schrijvers hanteren. Aan de andere kant zie je wel dat de serie een duidelijke ontwikkeling doormaakt. De tweede helft van het seizoen bereikt ongekende hoogten met vermakelijke afleveringen (Folsom Prison Blues), verrassende plotwendingen (Playthings en vooral Roadkill), interessante wat-als?-scenarios (What Is And What Should Never Be) en, het hoogtepunt van het seizoen, het loodzware Heart dat een onverwachte emotionele lading bevat. Af en toe maken de schrijvers een uitglijder, zoals in het humoristische Tall Tales, maar zelfs in die aflevering (die tegen het flauwe aanligt) blijf je nieuwsgierig naar hoe de vork in de steel ligt. Een speciale vermelding gaat tot slot uit naar het personage Andy Gallacher, een van de meeste relaxte bijfiguren van de serie tot dan toe. (Op een of andere manier vond ik het moment dat hij een beker koffie van een vreemde kreeg, hilarisch.)

The second season of Supernatural is a bit better than the first. Not only do Padalecki and Ackles get to grips with their characters better, but the monster-of-the-week principle is also being carefully abandoned.

However, the authors drop a few stitches here and there. Some episodes start off awkwardly, giving you the feeling you've missed something. (The intentions of the makers are clear, but it feels a bit forced.) Moreover, you quickly see through the trick that the writers use.

On the other hand, you can see that the series is undergoing a clear development. The second half of the season reaches new heights with entertaining episodes (Folsom Prison Blues), surprising plot twists (Playthings and especially Roadkill), interesting what-if? scenarios (What Is And What Should Never Be) and, the highlight of the season , the heavy Heart that contains an unexpected emotional charge.

Every now and then the writers make a slip, as in the humorous Tall Tales, but even in that episode (which is near the bland) you remain curious about how the fork is in the handle. Finally, a special mention goes to the character Andy Gallacher, one of the most relaxed minor characters of the series to date. (Somehow I thought the moment he got a cup of coffee from a stranger was hilarious.)
