Sabrina's sixteenth birthday is approaching. This half-witch half-humanoid teenager has been looking forward to that moment all her life. But then something strange comes her way, which has to make her decide between living in the light or living in the darkness. Ook ik keek vroeger graag naar de originele Sabrina serie. Naar aanleiding van deze serie weer eens op youtube gekeken naar een "hoogtepunten" compilatie, maar die serie spreekt me dus totaal niet meer aan. Gewoon veel te flauw. Dus interessant om te horen dat deze Sabrina serie veel duisterder zou worden. En inderdaad, deze serie heeft een behoorlijk onheilsspellende sfeer en er zijn meerdere gebeurtenissen die vrij angstaanjagend en/of luguber zijn. Erg positief. Sabrina zelf is een interessant karakter, die vol overgave de strijd aangaat tegen diverse misstanden en dan is het een enorme anticlimax dat ze in de laatste episode zich totaal lijkt over te geven aan de duivel, die ze eerder wilde bestrijden. Het voelt aan als karaktermoord, ook gezien hoe wulps ze ineens lijkt te zijn gedurende de laatste minuten. Filmisch verre van geweldig. Om de een of andere reden heeft de regisseur ervoor gekozen om alleen het centrum van het beeld scherp te stellen, de randen zijn vaak onscherp. Dit is echt bijzonder irritant en zorgt voor een flinke puntenaftrek. Enerzijds dus een aardige atmosfeer, maar anderzijds dus behoorlijk slecht geschoten, waardoor ik normaal op iets als 2,5* zou uitkomen. Het einde sorteert natuurlijk al voor op een tweede seizoen, maar dit seizoen kan ik alleen op zichzelf beoordelen en in het licht van wat ik heb gezien, valt de conclusie van dit seizoen behoorlijk tegen, waarvoor ik een halfje aftrek. 2* dus.

I used to love watching the original Sabrina series. As a result of this series I looked again on youtube for a "highlights" compilation, but that series no longer appeals to me at all. Just way too bland. So interesting to hear that this Sabrina series would get much darker.

Indeed, this series has quite a foreboding atmosphere and there are several events that are quite terrifying and/or lurid. Very positive. Sabrina herself is an interesting character, who fights diligently against various abuses and then it is a huge anticlimax that in the last episode she seems to completely surrender to the devil, whom she previously wanted to fight. It feels like character assassination, also considering how lascivious she seems to be during the last few minutes.

Cinematic far from great. For some reason, the director has chosen to focus only on the center of the image, the edges are often out of focus. This is really annoying and causes a big deduction of points.

So on the one hand, a nice atmosphere, but on the other hand, shot pretty badly, so I would normally end up with something like 2.5*. Of course the ending already sorts out for a second season, but this season I can only judge on its own and in light of what I've seen, this season's conclusion is quite disappointing, for which I deduct half a half. 2* so.
