Robert De Niro. One of the greatest Hollywood legends ever. He really broke through with Godfather Part II. Then came Taxi Driver, which would herald a collaboration of more than 50 years with Scorsese. He treated the audience for many decades with solid films with a real topper every few years. My personal favorite is Heat from the mid-90s.

But in the late 80s De Niro started doing comedy. Apparently a trend, because Arnold came with Twinsand Stallone with Tango & Cash. Midnight Run was De Niro's first real comedy (I think) and it was more than fine. It apparently tasted like more and slowly it started to take over. Since 2000, three quarters of his films feel like comedies.

I think that's a shame. When actors get older, I always think it's a shame when they spend their scarce time on crap movies. It's a waste of talent. Robert De Niro is 81 now, so everything he does has to be spot on.

The above is just to outline the mindset I went into Zero Day with. Spoiler: it’s the wrong mindset.

This miniseries is solid, with a great cast, good atmosphere, nice twists, but still: it doesn't transcend the genre anywhere. And that's kind of what you expect when De Niro gets involved. He can show that he's still fit in his old age. Swimming, running and looking really grumpy. But to be honest: the script doesn't offer him many more challenges than that. And that's a missed opportunity of course.

The script is easy to watch, but when you look back it seems a bit written by ChatGPT. A hodgepodge of familiar plot elements that mix it all into a qualitatively nice, but quite predictable bite-swallow-gone miniseries.

Not a top series, but just an entertaining and still good series.

Robert de Niro effortlessly does what he has to do in this series: just good acting. The story is a bit far-fetched, but that didn't bother me while watching. As far as I'm concerned, a nice series from Netflix, that is easy to watch and that never lasts too long. I thought the ending was fine, just a clear ending, without loose ends; that's also nice sometimes.
