Unorthodox plot

Esther Shapiro is a young woman who grew up in an ultra-Orthodox community in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. One day, she decides to leave her close faith community and arranged marriage behind and leaves for Berlin to pursue her goal of becoming a classical musician. But soon she is haunted by her past.

Beautiful, intimate drama about love, captivity and the search for liberation. Shira Haas, with her girlish appearance, is perfect for her leading role. Every emotion, no matter how small, can be read on her face. The ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in New York is portrayed respectfully, but insistently (and oppressively).

Fascinating, if rather one-sided, look at an ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. At one point, Esther Shapiro (Shira Haas), who was married off there, flees to Berlin to try to build a new life there. Certain story elements are a bit too easy and too short-sighted, but the effectively used flashbacks and the excellent and above all convincing role of Haas make up for a lot.
