A complex love story has to be crammed into 2h44, making it a rather 'cutting planks from thick wood' story. Several difficult topics that are discussed deserve some more time and attention.

The six-part The Lovers is set in Belfast. Against the historical and painful backdrop of the armed conflict for independence in Northern Ireland at the time, presenter Seamus (a limp and bored Johnny Flynn - Ripley) goes to Belfast for a news broadcast where he bumps into Janet (Roisin Gallagher - The Dry). What follows is an ambitious romantic comedy. With a near suicide, clashing cultural backgrounds and a truckload of secrets, love life is slow to get going. It doesn't help that The Lovers tries too hard to be a romcom with depth. The result is little more than an annoying version of The Troubles by The Lovers. Did I say comedy? There's not much to laugh at.
