Dopesick plot

In the heart of a small town in the state of Virginia, a portrait is painted of families affected by the opioid crisis in the United States. The portraits of the families and their intersecting stories hold up a mirror to where America is now. They shed hopeful light on the heroes battling the worst drug epidemic in American history. This goes from the boardrooms of Purdue Pharma to the corridors of the DEA.

Zwaar onder de indruk van Dopesick. Bizar verhaal natuurlijk en heel goed belicht hier. En wat een cast. Vooral Keaton en Dever

Heavily impressed with Dopesick. Bizarre story of course and very well explained here. And what a cast. Especially Keaton and Dever

Toch vreemd...Ik zag de hoge score op MM en ben gaan kijken. Los van het verschrikkelijke gegeven dat de farma-industrie desnoods over lijken gaat, vind ik dit een serie die van mensen en hun menselijk gedrag karikaturen maakt. Ook het warrige verloop door de jaren heen is voor mij een oorzaak dat de de serie niet beklijft. Vreemd dat de serie zo hoog scoort, 2 sterren is voor mij maximaal. En dan nog alleen voor de durf het onderwerp aan de orde te stellen. Als dit een exemplarisch voorbeeld is van VS-ers, dan hou je je hart vast voor de samenleving daar...

Strange...I saw the high score on MM and went to have a look. Apart from the terrible fact that the pharmaceutical industry is if necessary about corpses, I think this is a series that makes caricatures of people and their human behavior. The confused course over the years is also a reason for me that the series does not stick. Strange that the series scores so high, 2 stars is the maximum for me. And then only for the courage to raise the subject.

Het grotendeels op feiten gebaseerde drama Dopesick vertelt het verhaal van een fictief mijnwerkersstadje in Virginia, waar het middel OxyContin wordt geïntroduceerd. OxyContin is extreem verslavend (tien keer sterker dan morfine), maar wordt door de FDA (Food and Drug Administration) als lichte pijnstiller gecategoriseerd. Makers Danny Strong (Empire) en Barry Levinson (City On A Hill, Rain Man) hebben er een realistisch en aangrijpend drama van gemaakt. Michael Keaton - sinds lange tijd weer in een volwaardige serie - is geweldig als lokale huisarts, net als Kaitlyn Dever (Unbelievable) als een van zijn patiënten. Ook Michael Stuhlbarg (The Looming Tower, Fargo) speelt CEO Richard Sackler met een nietsontziende, achteloze gedrevenheid. Het drama van Dopesick ontrolt zich als een wurgslang. De meedogenloze verkooptechnieken en de verslavende werking van OxyContin, leiden uiteindelijk tot een half miljoen sterfgevallen. Daarom kunnen verhalen over moedige journalisten, juristen, klokkenluiders en individuen niet vaak genoeg verteld worden.

The largely fact-based drama Dopesick tells the story of a fictional mining town in Virginia, where the drug OxyContin is introduced. OxyContin is extremely addictive (ten times stronger than morphine), but is categorized as a mild pain reliever by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Creators Danny Strong (Empire) and Barry Levinson (City On A Hill, Rain Man) have turned it into a realistic and gripping drama.

Michael Keaton - long time back in a full-fledged series - is great as a local GP, as is Kaitlyn Dever (Unbelievable) as one of his patients. Michael Stuhlbarg (The Looming Tower, Fargo) also plays CEO Richard Sackler with a ruthless, careless drive. Dopesick's drama unfurls like a strangle snake. OxyContin's ruthless sales techniques and addictiveness ultimately lead to half a million deaths. That is why stories about courageous journalists, lawyers, whistleblowers and individuals cannot be told often enough.
