The Attaché plot

Avshalom, a successful musician, moves to Paris when his wife Annabelle gets a job there. Faced with terrorist attacks, the dream of a romantic year abroad quickly turns into a nightmare. It seems that not only Paris and Europe are undergoing a change, but also Avshalom itself.

Israëlisch drama dat zich voornamelijk in Parijs afspeelt. De serie ontwikkelt zich tegen de achtergrond en nasleep van de zes aanslagen in Parijs in november 2015. De eerste afleveringen hebben daarom een dreigende setting. In de kern is The Attaché een complexe liefdesgeschiedenis. Waar dit in Normal People intrigerend en sober is uitgewerkt, vliegt The Attaché alle kanten op. Hoofdrolspeler Annabelle (Héloïse Godet) is de attaché. Ze krijgt een kans medewerker bij de Israëlische ambassade te worden waar ze wordt opgeleid voor de diplomatieke dienst. Daarvoor moet zij vanuit Tel Aviv naar Parijs verhuizen. En dat doet ze. Manlief Avshalom (Ali Ben David, die ook tekent voor regie en scenario) gaat mee. Een mooi perspectief: man volgt vrouw naar buitenland voor haar carrière. Avshalom is van het type ongeleid, grillig en creatief. Of zoals sommigen zeggen; van de afdeling onvolwassen mannen. (Een grote afdeling zoals we allemaal weten). In 10 korte afleveringen van nog geen half uur doen Annabelle en Avshalom hun best om elkaar te begrijpen, in een strak ritme van ruziën en weer goedmaken. Het resultaat is nogal rommelig. The attaché is een drama met een beetje spanning, humor, romantiek, racisme, heimwee, ambitie en vriendschap. Om over alle familiaire kwesties nog maar te zwijgen. Het is een beetje veel van het goede. Veel te veel. De beste rol is voor Parijs zelf weggelegd. In al zijn charme, rust (!) en schoonheid word je verliefd op deze stad (halve ster extra). Maar je kunt ook, net als Avshalom, een kuub zand in je woonkamer storten om met een beamer het strand van Tel Aviv na te bootsen. Dat zal je partner nooit meer vergeten. Of vergeven.

At its core, The Attaché is a complex love story. Where this is elaborated in an intriguing and sober way in Normal People, The Attaché flies in all directions.

Main protagonist Annabelle (Héloïse Godet) is the attaché. She gets a chance to become an employee at the Israeli embassy where she is trained for the diplomatic service. For that, she has to move from Tel Aviv to Paris. And she does. Hubby Avshalom (Ali Ben David, who also signs for direction and screenplay) is coming along. A nice perspective: man follows woman abroad for her career. Avshalom is the unguided, capricious and creative type. Or as some say; of the immature men department. (A big department as we all know).

In 10 short episodes of less than half an hour, Annabelle and Avshalom do their best to understand each other, in a tight rhythm of arguing and making amends. The result is quite messy. The attaché is a drama with a bit of tension, humor, romance, racism, homesickness, ambition and friendship. Not to mention all family issues. It's a bit much of a good thing. Too much. The best part is for Paris itself. You will fall in love with this city in all its charm, tranquility (!) and beauty (half a star extra). But you can also, just like Avshalom, pour a cubic meter of sand in your living room to simulate the beach of Tel Aviv with a beamer. Your partner will never forget that. Or forgive.
