The old version starring Romy Schneider offered a romanticized, family-friendly portrayal of Elisabeth of Austria. This series paints a darker, more realistic picture with some explicit scenes. It remains fiction, sometimes even leaning towards the opposite extreme, but it provides a better understanding of a historical period.
The Empress signed her letters with Sisi with a few s. Swiss author Dominique Devenport portrays her as a rebellious, headstrong personality with sexual urges and political stances. Franz Joseph I is no longer the tender lover, but a harsh ruler. He brutally suppresses the Hungarian Uprising of 1848. When he clashes with both the Tsar and Napoleon III, he risks being caught between two fires.
A Latvian castle was used for the exterior of Schönbrunn Palace. The opulent interiors feature chandeliers, curtains, and carpets adorned with expensive fabrics and ornaments. The costumes and accessories are historically accurate. Beautiful animals include the Trakehner, the Lipizzaner, and the macaw. Despite all the splendor, this series is not for the faint of heart.
