A nice series.

I don't like crime series, and I personally think it's a shame that the genre is so over-represented among series. My expectations of Sherlock were therefore not too high, but because I liked the films (by Ritchie) I gave it a try. And I really liked it.

I personally think Watson is a fairly mediocre character, a bit of a gray mouse who rarely adds anything substantial to the investigations outside, but Sherlock Holmes is indeed nice. What particularly appeals to me about him is that he is very "rational": not very emotional, calculating, hyper-intelligent, averse to conventions. Those kinds of characters really appeal to me, and while Sherlock is a little too theatrical for my taste, his colorful, unconventional personality is quite fresh and entertaining.

And the cases are pretty nice too. The tempo is nice and fast and the deductions are indeed portrayed quite well (although it is sometimes quite difficult to follow the very fast-speaking Cumberbatch without subtitles). And the integration of Sherlock into modernity has succeeded. Visually it is also quite smooth.

But detective series will never be my thing, and in the end it's mainly Sherlock that keeps me watching, not the plot. And not all characters are equally successful. For example, I honestly don't understand what people see in Moriarty. In the movies, it was a cold, rational man who used his intelligence to gain power. In the series, it's a theatrical idiot with a long list of behavioral disorders - a parody of The Joker. And that's Sherlock's nemesis. Unfortunately. In addition, some plot developments (not necessarily in this season) are rather clichéd or contrived.

In short, Sherlock is an entertaining series that exceeded my expectations. But this genre just isn't mine, and that's why it doesn't really interest me. A nice snack though. 3*

My favorite kind of series is probably the crime/detective series. And this series is one of the best in the genre. Fantastic acting by just about everyone. Great storylines. Very nicely filmed, in terms of locations more than okay. Appropriate music. Fantastic villain(s). Very good.

No, this wasn't it for me. Cumberbatch can carry this in principle, but his Sherlock 2.0 character is too much of a lame gimmick in my opinion. Maybe it didn't help that I just saw three seasons of The Bridge, in which detective Saga Norén, like this Sherlock, falls well into the autism spectrum. A little too much of a good thing.

The storylines are nothing special and the series also looks ugly at times, especially the many scenes in the dark.

Although I also see some similar criticisms above, I think the series is very overrated based on the average.
